Because this is supposed to be the last version of Windows. I'm sure Microsoft will find it much easier to patch errors if everybody is using the same version...

I know you don't making it up 
I only say that:
1. Microsoft never told so
2. We had something similar (and this time from Microsoft) with VS 2012, but nothing changed there
3. Windows is the most profitable product of Microsoft, and if the model described in that (and other) articles is true it will make it as much as 5 times expensive as today to have a running Windows OS - most people will not pay that prize...

They might have some legal issues with that. If memory serves, the Win7/8/8.1 licenses did not allow Microsoft to install whatever they wanted on the licensees' systems. Furthermore, I don't think a full O/S upgrade would come under the "important fixes" that most people allow to be installed automatically.
If I were a lawyer (God forbid!), I'd love to prosecute the Class Action lawsuit for this! :evil grin:

You have a year to upgrade to 10 for free.
If you still want it after that, then you'll have to pay for it.
If MS was to force everybody to upgrade to it in "less than 3 months" from now, then there goes that revenue stream.

I know it's supposed to be a free upgrade, that's why we here in NZ have to pay $98 to upgrade our systems. Nothing is ever free.
The difficult may take time, the impossible a little longer.

Or did you make the mistake of giving them your credit card details?

The $98 charge is by the oem/shops that distribute the upgrade. If we use the windows update installation method, we can easily blow the data caps on our broadband accounts. I have a reference number from MSTECH services that ensures a free upgrade for my computer, but only that one computer. The catch is that I have to go to the MS office in the city centre to collect my upgrade.
The difficult may take time, the impossible a little longer.

Get the media, and give copies to anyone who asks. The bits are worthless on their own[*]; it's still up to the individual users to get their keys to make use of them.

I sometimes have a Feeling that MS made an AI program (Intelligence in that as in "cross-breed a monkey and the donkey from Shrek) just to let it write the "Installers".
