Oops(*).
(*) Of course, we're hoping we live in an offshoot of the Star Trek™ universe, so a little 'oops' with the physics will get resolved by the end of the episode.

When Hawking made this announcement many other astronomers were rather dumbfounded.
There is an interesting documentary on this somewhere on youtube.
It turned out that Hawking said that information was not lost however he did not describe and prove the mechanism that allowed the information leave the event horizon.
This was what left the other astronomers dumbfounded - a statement was made but little proof was made to back it up.
Those theoretical physisists tsk tsk (as though I understand any of it!)

Sadly, we still use Visual SourceSafe... we're not up with the cool kids and using git .

See the way to a hash before an evil goblin concealed itself with a depleted sack (11)
You're lucky (or perhaps not) that I remembered to do this, just flicking through my notepad for something and noticed the clue I'd written down yesterday.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Orchiectomy?
Having some trouble explaining it all though...
goblin - orc
concealed itself - hid?
Unless you meant orchidectomy but that would be 12 letters.

You're on the right lines, but no.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Correct.
Thank the lord for that, your turn tomorrow.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Tomorrow's WSOCCC will be Houston time - i.e. very late!
I'll try to post it around 1230 UTC if I'm awake.

See the way to a hash- crypt is a C function to produce a password hash
evil goblin - orc
concealed itself - hid
cryptorchid - an animal with one or both testes absent from the scrotum - a depleted sack
I wasn't sure about the crypt bit, but I liked that it was computery so chucked it in anyway.

Blimey! Now I'm not sure whether I should be impressed or annoyed.
a C function, indeed!
