Didn't know the difference between "scotchman" and "Scotsman" -- yet another reason why the task of compiling a dictionary should never have been placed in his hands.

The DVD/CD player on my lappie has stopped working. I put a movie in last night, it spins up and stops immediately.
A quick Google [other search engines are available] shows either driver or hardware at fault, but I can't seem to be able to find a reliable source as to what my next step should be.
So instead of a reliable source, I've decided to ask you drunken reprobates. Any ideas what I should do?

As above, but it really depends on how much you use the optical drive. An external drive can be obtained for not a lot and can be plugged in and used as required. I have been looking at an external blu-ray writer drive for a while now, the question is do I really need it.

Get an external one, amazon [other shops may have that stuff also] offers some in a pricing range of 12 to 25 €. It might not be that expensive in $ or £ i think

For a minute I thought you had been round to my house
The wife sent an email about some other bits an bobs, and in the middle of it was "I'm not sure if you want to know, but the big telly is not working, there is sound but no picture" This is the 63" one I bought in December 2010.
A quick search around all everything points to either a) a blown capacitor or b) a failed inverter board.
So, it may either be;
a) A relatively cheap diy fix for both possible faults (<£100 if new inverter board needed)
or
b) an excuse to buy a new bigger, better telly (only downside is I really can't do with the additional expense at the moment)

How about a third option (if you are feeling brave) - a trip to ebay to look for a broken TV of the same make and model, preferably one with a broken screen, but working electronics.
Best of luck if you go this route.

That falls under option 'a'

LED type or other. If other, it may be just the backlight.
