It's all happening at our place at the moment - we've just come into spring and the snakes have come out to find a mate... We have had four different carpet snakes cruise by in the past day - all heading for the large female carpet snake we have that lives in the ceiling... When I say large, I mean HUGE... she's over 4m long...
The four snakes that went past were probably 3.5m plus, 3.5m, 2.5m and 2m long... Got some good pics of them if anyone is interested - I'll have to get them off my phone when I get home.

Yikes...
The carpety's aren't poisonous, and are generally pretty docile... they do bite like a rabid dog if they get cranky though... We do have a bunch of poisonous snakes in this area, but we don't see them too often...

we (now i) had one[^] of these on the front lawn a year or two ago

How lucky you are. Here in Sweden, we have nothing more interesting than this little thing[^] - it IS poisonous, but not very much, and it never attacks humans unless you actually step on it (who wouldn't?)

These[^] are the most dangerous snake we get to see in our area, unless we go to the zoo to look at the imported ones.

Are you sure these are carpet snakes? According to Wikipedia the largest ever recorder was 2.8 and most never grew over 2! You may have a world record there!

I know Wikipedia is not necessarily correct... there may be more than one type of snake in the world called a carpet snake... Here's a slightly more reputable source: clickety[^]
The photos I have are almost identical to the ones on the page (including two snakes in the rafters).

Sounds nasty!!
We have our fair share of venomous snakes... I wouldn't be so blasé about it all if these ones were... these ones are just big and impressive!!

Actually I am of the few that loves snakes and spiders. Wouldn't be so cruel as to keep them as a pet but in the wild they are gorgeous.
