Appearing busy, faffing is my task today, I get kicked out tomorrow PM

Is there any stationary left? Yes? You're not busy enough.
And if you're wondering how many post-its it is appropriate to take, if you enough to wallpaper your house, twice, then it's time to slow down.

They should thank us, as they wouldn't have a White House - before we burnt it it was made of gray stone, - they had to whitewash it to hide the smoke staining.

yes the "Off White House" or the "Grey House" or the "Mucky White with Brown Bits House" doesn't have the same ring, does it

At which point, the fledgling US Navy poked the Royal Navy in the eye bye taking HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane and Levant. Some bloody ship named the Constitution....
But thanks for the history lesson.
Long ago I worked with a guy that had a very, very good Japanese friend. His friend would always send him a Happy Pearl Harbor Day card around 12/7. He, in turn would send him a card on 8/6 or 9/2 depending on his whim.

yes the connie did do well, the fact that if she was in RN service she would have been classed as ship of the line as she carried thirty 24-pounders on the main deck, twenty-four 32-pounders and two bored out 18-pounders on the upper desk whilst those poor little frigates she engaged were all 18 pounders ships.
she, I note NEVER picked on something her own size
ok to be fair
HMS Guerriere was a 38 x 18pounder Frigate
HMS Java was a 28 x 18 pounder Frigate
HMS Pictou was a 14 x12 pounder schooner
HMS Cyane was a 22 x 18 pounder Frigate
HMS Levant was a 20 x Carronade Light Frigate
it is debateable was to whether the total broad side of ALL of these ships would be greater than that of the Connie let alone individually.
I do notice that it never tried the HMS Leander for size (let alone say the Victory or another 1st rate), that would have been a fairer fight, being proud of victories is one thing but this smacks of the big kid beating up the 1st year for his pocket money
If I remember correctly the only victory you had on land occurred after the signing of the peace treaty

As I said the Connie would not have been classed as a frigate in rn service
And whilst you did have yorktown etc I wonderif yorktown would have had the same result with troops from wellingtons army instead of 3rd rate misfits and mercenaries

Connie - I agree. I have a book on my shelf "The Frigates" - a good read.

you forgot the large force of French (which Nappy wanted back but didn't have the ships to do it)
If you ever get this side of the pond we have a couple of them left there is HMS Unicorn at Dundee and HMS Trincomalee at Hartlepool
and of course the longest commissioned warship HMS Victory
and something a bit later in HMS Warrior also at Portsmouth a ship when launched was reckoned to be the equal of any TWO foreign NAVIES
(we should have kept HMS Dreadnaught as she too was a revolution in warships)

No, hadn't forgotten them at all... like I said, the politics right around 1800-1840 were nothing short of amazing.
Anyway, I have been to Boston numerous times, have seen the Connie, have not yet been able to tour her. Checking out HMS Victory just went on my bucket list. I'll have to look up the others. One of my favorite movies is Master and Commander - mainly because it's one of my first blue ray dvds, and it do like nice on the big screen.
sailor at heart....

"a picture and caption that was clearly meant as a light-hearted trolling of Americans. Many of them, however, appeared not to get the joke"
Not getting jokes appears to be something of an American specialty. Don't even ask one to define the word "irony"; you'll be there all day.
I imagine that this will be celebrated every year in the UK, from now on. I shall certainly throw a party.
BTW, were you aware that the original design for the statue of liberty had her thumbing her nose in the direction of England? At least the French have a sense of humour.

Please document the Statue of Liberty statement! I love it.
Can't take a joke - sad, isn't it? We have so many people walking around with chips on their shoulders, just waiting for someone to offend them.

You can make a fantastic game on CP. Rules would be as.
You will post a CPROTD.
One has to find the actual discussion link which follows your rule. Like in above case one has to find the discussion where OP has started a truthful topic and had downvoted or removed badly.

The day before we came home our next door neighbour in Balatonfured gave me the password for the wireless router he has and says we cane use it any time we're in town.
