As I read your post, look at the crazy targeted ad (for Motown music) which appeared at the top of CodeProject.
Wow!!!

I was looking for a desktop Whatsapp!
Lo and behold, there is one!
"Whatsapp Messenger for Windows 8."
And then.. it installed no less than 6 crapware!
I can't get rid of the last one "omega-plus"
When I go to control panel "uninstall" it... starts to install it!
Arg...
Will have to go the good old registry way!
|
|
|
|
|
The "uninstall" in the control panel is simply a registry entry that points to the installer/uninstaller executable. It's easy enough to lie to it.
|
|
|
|
|
Yep I can imagine...
Erased anything I can find in the registry, any thing new in program file, anything in startup according to MSConfig, stop and delete suspicious services...
Still can't change the startup page of IE and Chrome!
Running a full scan with Windows Defender, will reboot after that, fingers crossed...
Might have to download an other anti malware...
[EDIT] Haha, they updated the shortcut on the toolbar!
Now it's starting normal IE!!
|
|
|
|
|
The startup page on IE used to be an entry in the registry as well... at least back in the day. Not sure if they've ever changed that to a config file somewhere.

I've ranted about twatty email signatures before, but sat here looking at one that has made me think of something else too.
This may be the most irritating email ever received (or one of many as I've had 12 from the same person today (each one has contained one, one line sentence aside from the signature)).
Firstly, the actual email is written in comic sans. Bad enough, but then comes the signature.
Name
Job Title
Company Name
envelope icon followed by full postal address
telephone icon, the word 'Tel.', then the telephone number including international dialing code and internal extension number
some icon I don't recognise, the word 'Fax:', then fax number including international dialing code
another icon I cannot work out, the word 'Mobile:', then mobile number including international dialing code
computer icon, the word 'E-mail :', then clickable mailto:sillybint@company.co.uk
world icon, the word 'Web :', then clickable url for the company website
And then at the end is an image of a green frog holding up a big red foot and the text (as part of the image) 'BEFORE PRINTING THIS E-MAIL please consider the environment'.
All very irritating and unnecessary stuff, particularly as she works downstairs from me, but between the website and the image are two more lines;
Team Name - Winner Best Technical Team 2010
Team Name - Winner Best Overall Team 2010
Now, aside from these two awards having no significance whatsoever within the company, let alone outside of it, they are 4 years old now. It's time to move on.
Whenever I see things like this, signs in businesses, especially restaurants or fast food places, "Localville Take Away of the Year 2008" for example, I always think to myself why no more since? What has happened since then, have you got a bit sh*t, clearly not been best for a long time, if it has been that many years then maybe I'd better have a look around for somewhere else to eat.
It's even worse if they have two or three from a number of years ago. Just one, maybe the awards committee like to share them around, perhaps they're just attaboys and everyone eventually gets one. But if you won in 2006 and 2007 and still display those signs I just think that you must have really gone downhill in the years since.
How long after winning something does not winning anything else make the thing you did win reflect badly upon you?
Yeah, I'm bored. I've spent most of the day responding to one sentence emails.

Exactly!

My company email signature contains 14 lines of information after my name and title.
Slightly over the top too methinks.

there is software out there for outlook that strips off signatures, normally for internal mail but it might just work on external (I hope, fingers crossed)

0) Click reply.
1) Highlight the idiotic signature.
2) Type: I did, and your obnoxiously long signature is increasing the number of trees killed and dinosaur blood extract used to paint their corpses. Your use of color ink only makes it worse.
3) Print the draft email.
4) Snailmail it to the offender.
5) ???
6) Win!
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Ever hear of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer? I think they have been around for a couple of different centuries.
I have a guy that send internal emails with a signature meant for emails sent to a customer. Very distracting.

(chuckle) As irritating as that is, you might want to spend a little time in my alternate universe -- independently published fiction -- for comparative purposes. You know, to establish a baseline.
Indie writers are forever touting "awards" they've won, or claiming "best-selling" status, with absolutely no substantiation. Ask one about it and he'll either slather you with vituperation, change the subject, or clam up completely.
I suppose the desire to be praised is so strong in some people that, in the absence of preferable alternative sources, they'll simply heap praise upon themselves. It comes as no surprise that it happens among engineers, too.
