Haha Yes that's not the idea to break it deliberately, but to let Win break itself.
And I've never heard of anyone saying that cleaning up or fixing windows was better than reinstalling

On my old laptop, installing Ubuntu over the pre-installed WinXP made the trick immediately.

*nix FTW.
A mate of mine was one of the tech support bods at Edinbugh Uni, there was a server there that had been running over 10 years straight (1992 -2002, when my mate left). No one knew what it was and they were too scared to switch it off. Total sum maintenance - one scary day when they took the side off to vacuum out the accumulated dust in case it became a fire hazard.

Install only Windows, no other crap.
Try again, compare the results.

I am not sure about Windows, but I once bought a glass top coffee table (not exactly like this[^], but close).
I brought it home, set it up and wanted to vacuum around the table. The vacuum cleaner hit one of the table legs and the glass plate closest to the floor shattered

Ah, yes. The 'Broken Windows' fallacy.
Actually, if it stops breaking, their profits should decline if the fallacy is in fact true.

Historically, this has virtually always been down to badly behaved drivers, something that MS can't do anything about. (Apart from write their own)
If you create a computer that you can plug practically anything into and get 3rd parties to write crap drivers which operate in Kernal mode it's what happens.
Alternative is Apple - Computers for Airheads™.

We use windows as the operating systems of our machines, then we install a software that enables the computer as a machine controller and we use Visual C++ to create the GUI programs that machine operators use.
I've been using this for 16 years continuously and never, and I mean never I've seen a problem with that.
Windows works well unless you start installing tons of extra software there.

My dad did it in a day. He got a new system, don't remember which version. I told him to copy the "Pictures", "Music" and "Documents" separately from his old system to their respective folders on the new system. He looked at that and thought that it would be more efficient to just copy the entire user folder over, which he did, accepting all the security prompts. It rendered his system barely operable. I told him he'd messed up his system and to do a full factory restore. He called Dell. They told him to do a full factory restore. Afterward, he sent me a very sheepish mea culpa.
Mind you, my father has a PhD in nuclear physics and built a computer for testing purposes back in the 1980s.

WOOOHOOOOOOO!
Well, nothing really special here, but as we were going at an ultra-800kb-when-the-wind-blowed-in-the-right-direction of download speed...

Yep, in fact, when ADSL service fell down and we started receiving service through a 3G stick it was much faster...

It's nice to know that the couple of hundred bytes of your message started their journey at high speed.

So, Mrs Yoda is running a business selling books for Usborne. She's now decided that she wants to start keeping track of her stock. As she's going to be managing this out of her business, she's looking for recommendations for cheap (free is better) inventory management software. Any recommendations?

While I would normally relish this, I have so many projects on the go right now that I can't fit it in. Mrs Yoda is a loving woman who appreciates this, which is why she asked me about it - she's wanting to move from her Excel spreadsheet which just isn't comprehensive enough for her anymore.

Since she used Excel, she could as well use a database (if a software Guru is incidentally nearby, then a nice GUI would be soon available).

Excel?

Excel works surprisingly well, at least in the early days.
Trouble is that once they get used to it, it starts to get expanded. One small company I worked for the MD started with a nice simple Excel sheet for the inventory, and "added value" to include automatic subassemblies, pricing, resources, and so on to the point where changing a stock level tied the PC up for 20 minutes...

That's a common sin: so many people (me too) used Excel where a database was far more appropriate.

d@nish wrote: Why not write one and ask for a boys night out pass from the Mrs? That would require free time. As well as running a business, I have some courses to write for Pluralsight, things I have to do for Intel, some more articles that I want to write for CodeProject. By the time I'll have a free period, it will be next year- oh, and I'm not that bothered about boys nights out.
