Contrary to popular opinion, not everything in Scotland is deep fried. Some things are simply shallow-fried.

There is a somber air across the company at the moment, particularly offshore on the respective platforms.
It all started 3 weeks ago when one of the lads died while on holiday with his family. He was 51. He was on my shift in for a couple of years (2012/2013) and had also worked with him previously.
Yesterday afternoon it was announced that another one of the lads again died while on holiday, he was away with a few of the other lads (not sure of his exact age, but think mid 50's).
Yesterday evening it was announced that another colleague had died at home, he was 47. I had worked with him for 20+ years (basically since I started) and again he was on my shift for many years when I went through my technician period, and then I was also his supervisor for a while, and on to be his manager (he was a supervisor by this time). In the early years before having kids, we also spent many a day in the pub and generally just being loons in the way you would imagine young guys with too much money and too much time off would do.
So to Dave, Derek and Ade, we are thinking of you.......

Such young people! Sad to hear it...

No, it is not.....the guys I've spoken to are saying, WTF are MPs getting involved for.
The CAA and the helicopter operators manage this. O&G companies have neglible influence (in my view).

So...the company is going to ban staff holidays? Just a guess...
Sorry to hear about them: that's not a long life at all.

I'm sorry for your loss, Dave.
We've lost three where I work in the last four years, two of which I worked with directly.

That is very sad, particularly because these people died at a relatively young age. I wonder if there is anything in the nature of a career of working on a platform, or in the type of people who self-select to become career platform workers, which is associated with reduced mortality ?
I hope not !
yours, Bill

I have a feeling that in 2 out of the 3.....that may have something to do with it.
For me, having kids made a massive change in my lifestyle, particularly on the partying front. It use to be 2 or 3 weeks of 18 hour a day boozing, 300+ units a week was not uncommon. (Recommended male maximum is 35units/week).
There was definitely a live fast, party hard, die young mentality through the whole of the 90's. I miss the whole experience of it...it is very hard to put it into words.
Now though, all grown up (sort of!) with wife and kids, things have naturally moved on in the right direction.

Very sad to hear, Dave, but it's something one has to get used to as we age. It seems now that not a week goes by that I don't see an old friend or acquaintance on the obit page of the newspaper. One day, I suppose, it will be my turn, but I don't expect to read it. It's much more difficult when they're so young, though. Cheers to their memory, and many thanks for all the good times we had...
