No, we are talking about speeding tickets, no? They can be given relative to the income IIRC, so not just taxes then
Although I think you'll have to drive really fast or kill someone:
Norwegian law §27[^]
Roughly translated:
When the fine imposed, it should, in addition to the offense, taken into account of the condemned property and what he by his living conditions can be expected to pay.
The fine accrues to the Treasury.

Speeding fines are being increasingly linked to income across Europe.
There was a story a year or two ago about some fella in Switzerland I think who was caught going very fast in a very expensive car and was looking at a record breaking fine.

Was it Jeremy Clarkson?
It sounds reasonable, if you had lots of money you could in essence just pay to drive faster.

I reckon if you drive fast enough the camera's won't be able to recognise you

I remember when they were testing the original speed cameras here in Qld... turns out if you were going 247km/hr or faster, you were out of the frame before the picture had been captured.
I also remember seeing a speed camera pic of a guy caught doing 236km/hr and thought "man, if you had just gone that smidge faster!!"

Death causes in France:
0-Cancer 150,000/year
1-Heart disease 140,000/year, among which 35,000 for eating too salty
2-Smoking 73,000/year (not included in above)
3-Drinking 50,000/year (not included in above)
...
23-Car crash 3,000/year, among which 1,000 for speeding
So I think they might think twice about priorities before trying to slow down everybody, especially by fining them.

They're not trying to slow anyone down, or deter anyone from any of the other crimes they're raising the fines for, they're just trying to increase revenue.

0/2) Stop the French smoking? Now there is a task!
1) Get salt and cream out of food? That means changing recipes. In France! That's a capital offence, isn't it?
3) No chance!
23) Ah! Easy - couple of cameras plus few envelopes equals loads of money rolling in...

OK, for the sake of stereotypes I could imagine agreeing that we "often" give up, but not that we give up living.

Holy crap! Fines that large should be against the law.

Magistrates' fines rarely get near the maximum as it stands, this won't really make any difference, although it's good for headline writers.
