At an event on Saturday at the Royal Society in London, a conversation program running on a computer called Eugene Goostman was able to convince more than a third of the judges that it was human.
That just means that 1/3 of the judges were idiots. Seriously though, if determining whether a machine passes the Turning Test relies on, well, humans, then we have a significant problem. And interesting test would be the inverse: given a real human being, how many "judges" will deem the person to be a machine?
Technically, only a machine should be able to determine whether another machine passes the Turing Test.

i agree
1/3 of the judges is just a "Placebo effect", 2/3 should be better to eliminate morons.
Turing was more subtle, he didn't write AI "equals" RI, but only AI "simulates" RI.

I am looking for a device that will enable me to turn on/off a power socket remotely via a pc or an app on my phone.
I have seen these (CLICKY)[^] but wondered if anyone had experience of using this equipment and whether it was easy to install/use.
Any information gleaned from the hive mind will help me make an informed choice.

Ah, a 1982 Mobile Phone.
No use, alas, as the obsolete nature of the OS disavows me from getting in to alter the BIOS.
However it has potential as a 'point-of-entry' aid.

Is this some kind of torment for the kids ?
I am against that. This might actually do the work, and make the poor little innocent children do their homework and home chores.

Hi Dave
I came across [Home Wizard]but It's more a complete home automation packet that is extendable so you can add modules such as an IP camera to it or temperature control to it and so on. It has mobile apps for the remote control

We got a Kankun remote socket that looks very much like the Belkin model. My husband managed to set it up fairly easily so that he can turn the socket on and off from his Android phone.
We haven't used it much yet but I can see how it can be very useful.

I find the implication in this ruling [^]to be amazing. So when a council does it's due diligence it goes to a financial advisor and uses a rating organisation to asses the validity of an investment. Both of these organisation publish false information. Now they want no responsibility for the counil NOT doing their due diligence.
I hope this does not get overturned and they get to stick to the FIs that ripped them off.

So, the FI's basically have to show they are incompetent (or deliberately and illegally misleading customers) or pay up.
If I were them, I'd have paid up quietly and hoped nobody noticed they were incompetent...

I agree with you there, I think it may be that the councils can stick all of the damages on any one of the 3 organisations that has pissed them off.
The numbers don't even seem to be that much ,well not for a Bank anyway thay have a licence to print money after all. I imagine S&P are a little worried and the advisor has probably closed up shop and bolted already.

Complex decision I agree and subject to the vagaries of law. However in regard to the ratings agencies someone has to say "The King has no clothes". I think perhaps they need to be doing a little due diligence themselves which is what is expected of them. Their credibility should be on the line - but is it?

Their "opinions" (I got sick to death of the bastards using that word during the hearings) are so interwoven into the financial world's processes, both digital and on paper, that they can't be "outwoven".
The next time they see something that will make billions for their cronies at the expense of the lives and livelihoods of everyone else in the world, those billions will be reaped, and the rest of us will suffer, again.

I would recommend the film Inside Job for an explanation, of the complexities, of what is basically a system designed to make the banks huge amounts of money at the expense of ordinary investors.
