2*r^2/pi*r^2 = 0.6366
Round peg in square hole area ratio is :
pi*r^2/4*r^2 = 0.78529
where r is radius circle.
Therefore I submit a round peg in square hole is better fit.

diagonal of square = 2r
using Pythagoras:
side = √((2r)2/2) = √2r
area = √2r * √2r = 2r2

Area of the square within circle is diagonal^2/2 == (2r)^2/2
