The configuration you're after seems reasonable then.

If you can, upgrade to 16G and a 512 SSD. That will probably give you 7 years of service.
If you want a small footprint (but will always use a large monitor and full-size keyboard and mouse), I'd recommend going with a Brix Pro[^] instead of a laptop.

Having fixed the button on my left keypad button ultrabook a couple of weeks ago I can afford to wait for a little bit longer before committing. I had originally planned to get a Zenbook UX301, but the spec I wanted appeared to be vapourware and I lost interest in it.
Scott Hanselman mentioned the X1 in one of his presentations a couple of weeks ago and he appeared to be impressed with it.

I'm hoping I never have to buy another new computer.

Is that because the vast array of choice and speed that it all changes make it so damn difficult to pick one!

It's more because I don't care.

I agree, it should cover .net and anything else you want to program with

This X1 is pretty much one of the best machines one can get, but it doesn't come with an anti-glare display, does it? I'm no friend of the glossy ones, that's why I'm considering a X240 instead.

Get as much memory as possible.
I think a latest generation i5 (don't know the code names nowadays) might be sufficient for most programming needs.
I'd rather be phishing!

I agree. If the choice is between:
more memory/bigger SSD with an i5
or:
less memory/smaller SSD with an i7
then go for the i5 option.
The processors these days are fast enough (certainly the i5) that the memory and disk bottlenecks are the biggest problems.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

MacBook Pro, Early 2011 edition, 15", 8GB RAM, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 256 GB SSD.
I run Windows 8.1 Update 1 in VMWare Fusion.
If I could change anything, I would get more RAM.

I got the XPS 15 with similar specs and that is amazing. What I like most about it is the display. My work laptop is a 2 year old i5 with a 256Gig SSD and I've never noticed a performance difference between the two. Everything runs just as fast on my 4 year old i7. If you get decent hardware these days, I don't think you can really go wrong.

I'm 6'4" and I have big hands, so coding on a laptop is not an option for me. I use mine solely to go to client sites.
For my desktop I have 2 24" monitors, wireless keyboard & mouse... all the standard desktop enhancments. I also own a laptop and the once or twice I tried to work on it I gave up.
Unless you're going to plug in monitors & a keyboard/mouse, go with a desktop.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is

I got a new Latitude 7440 (I7, 8GB memory, 256 GB HDD, 1920x1080) a month ago. And I can say that I was positively surpriced by two things:
- Batterytime, it lasts for 6-8 hours of procrastination, which is quite a lot more than at the best two hours on my old one.
- The SSD is ten times faster than the SSD in my old laptop. And then it was still an even bigger wow feeling to get the SSD on my old laptop.
Downsides:
- Came without DVD, and has only three USB connectors spaced out so that I can't use the external DVD that needs the power from two USB connectors
- Has text size set to a default of 120DPI, which is utterly stupid, because it means that the local IIS renders all text in images and such likes to 125% of the normal size. Fixed it through a registry setting.

Just get anything, .Net dev is not that hard on machines (particularly if you don't use VS), so ergonomics and a good display are the most important things.

I think that would do it.
Also, I would search - there have been multitudes of threads.

Well, if they didn't keep pigs in the most unsanitary (and not to mention cruel) environments for these meat "factories", then maybe these diseases wouldn't become so rampant. Then again, maybe when a good sized hurricane hits the Atlantic seaboard and dumps millions of tons of pig sh*t[^] into the water and people start to get sick, someone will finally take notice. Or read this article[^]. We need to be thinking about where our food is coming from and making better choices.

Actually, as far as I'm concerned the real problem is the over population of earth. But how do you solve that?

Genocide.
