Looking for a cheapish classic to pootle around in, so been keeping an eye on eBay.
An MGB GT for sale in Sunderland 10 mins walk from the office £2,000[^]. So I saunter over. The place is closed, so I phone him, he says he thinks he's sold it.
A couple of hours later, he's phoned back. He has sold it, to a classic car dealership who know what they are buying. They're advertising it for £500 more[^]. Worse, he puts me through to the new buyers who want to sell it to me.
Third time it's happened in the last month, arrange to take a look and the car has gone.

Get yourself a "Mike bloke" from Wheeler Dealers disguise, go in there and offer them £500 they always accept his stupid low offers. Don't forget the violent "break the recipients wrist" handshake too.

That programme really hacks me off, we'd all make a profit if we could somehow buy cars at two thirds the realistic price.

I just thought he was buying it as a hobby car to pootle around in, my mistake. In that case Keith should walk at a faster pace as oppossed to sauntering.

The intention is for it to be a hobby / light use 2nd car, for when the main car is in the garage or worse she who must be obeyed want to borrow it.
It's been for sale for a week and a bit, I've been on leave so today was my first real chance to have a loot. You'd have to be a cretin to buy any classic on eBay without looking in person first, and there aren't many cars for sale around here, not being the richest part of the UK.

According to the website they are looking for "under £2500" and to be honest that's not expensive unless its a rust bucket...it will cost you that much again to get the colour changed to BRG or red.

If it is in a reasonable condition it is at an OK price, problem was if I'd got to the first dealership earlier he'd have let it go for much less than that listed on eBay at less than 2k, which is a bargain if in good nick. Also £2k is at the upper end of my budget, I'm really looking for a rolling project but it did look a bargain.
The colour was off-putting however.

That is a choice I'm looking at, but I'm looking for something a bit more basic TBH. I miss my old Spitfie TBH, not really powerful but drove like a go-kart, the prices seem a bit daft for these now and they're rarer than hen's teeth round here.

I'm on my second GT6 (Mark3 rotoflex) and the prices for those are quite mad.
If you can find a Sprint engined TR7 there's not much to go wrong with them - aside from the pop-up headlights.

I think the Spitties and GT6s are getting rare - Triumph doesn't seem to have the following MG has. Plus classic car prices rise in a recession for some reason.
Have ever driven an TR7? I have no clue how they handle.

Was a passenger in a TR7 - to be honest it wasn't very exciting as the exhaust note is not great and the cabin/seating position doesn't feel as ridiculously close to the road as a Spit or GT6.
That is why they are so very cheap!

Not necessarily, when it comes to classic cars the normal dealers can be useless, the evidence here is the much more realistic price being asked by the second dealer. Looks very like I missed a bargain. Also, if you're prepared to do the work then they're not prohibitive to run.

I think he means a fortune to maintain. MGs aren't known for their reliability.

My toy car is MG engined. It has always been very reliable and to date the only problems have been stones puncturing the radiator and a blown head gasket - the original '64 gasket by the looks of it.
