Hi All,
You maybe aware that I am battling with a near impossible task at the moment due to a lack of information and the get it working attitude of those above me. Leading me to ask some Q&A questions that have probably confused those trying to answer. The best one so far was 'make it work like it before' answer 'it didn't, it was swallowing the errors until the error logging gave out, then it exploded', 'but it was working', 'no it wasn't' (at this stage I'm starting to feel like Dilbert), 'Well it looked like it', 'that was the point I am trying to make'. Ini files mis-aligned, Thread.Sleep() chucked in to confuse things comments that are not right, there not even wrong. Default Serial Port names, which are getting the wrong commands sent. No documentation at all, I'm having to pick through the firmware to get some idea of what commands are there and what they appear to do! I am told 'once you have got reliable code send it', at this stage code which complied with out an a torrent of errors would be good! I am now being pushed on to other things as well...
Help!

So...now would be a good time to ask for:
A) A raise.
And
B) An assistant.
Then
C) Palm the cr@p off onto the assistant and cherry pick the good bits!

I once got to work for a company who did that to an employee. No documentation, "just fix the code".
After a while, they asked another employee to help him, since he could not get by with the code in the too short time schedule (!). This created more problems than it solved, since most part of his time, he was trying to explain to the new team mate how the code worked, time during which he was of course not working to improve it.
Then they asked this second employee to fire the first one, since obviously he was not good enough to do what he had been told (!!). And because of that, the second one quit, since the first was gone and all the partial know-how with him, and because he was pissed to be forced to fire his colleague.
And then, they hired me to save the day.

And...did they tell you this before or after you took the job?
And why / how long did you stay?

No, they lied about the situation.
I stayed 6 months, that was the time it took me to find something else. I also happen to get the code fixed in that time. I was happy to quit, though !

It does seem like this is getting very close to 'find new job' territory.

Worse bit is the job is good, I get to play with embedded systems that people use. I get to do bits of hardware and software and generally I like it. Boss is quite good, pays not bad and I can walk to work...

Aye, the "burglar joke" reports go back at least four years: http://wtfjournal.com/[^] - so there is a good chance it's a repost.

That's a very definite statement, especially given the notorious quality of the search tool here...

It's been here 1hr 10mins and NOBODY has managed to post a Repost link.
Trust me, this proves beyond reasonable doubt, it is not a repost.

All it proves is that no one has looked or found. I do recall seeing this story before but I can't [a] remember where or [b] be bothered to look.

That is not a viable scenario when it has been mooted that there is a possibility of a repost. Trust me people have searched.
