I dimly remember some news from a few years back, to the effect that Intel wanted to create a general-purpose app store thing. If I remember correctly the idea was to bring the app store concept to platforms other than smartphones, including of course the PC. But as the captain of the Hindenburg might have said, things didn't quite pan out the way they wanted.
"Whereas smaller computer languages have features designed into them, C++ is unusual in having a whole swathe of functionality discovered, like a tract of 19th century Africa."

Never heard of it. Also, why did it even exist? Did the world really need yet an other "App Store"?
BTW, can we please nuke that word. From orbit.

"AppUp" was the formal name of the store, as given to it by Intel. It is perfectly correct to refer to it as the Intel AppUp store.

Yes, I don't deny that. I was referring to "App Store".

It was.
Now it's "Intel AppOff"

CodeProject did a campaign on this a little over a year ago. It saddens me that there are regulars who are unaware of the AppUp store even after CPs involvement.

I heard of it. It was probably from here. But, I just didn't care. There are a lot of things out there competing for my mindshare, and an alternate app store is no where near the top.

I have definitely heard of the AppUp store, likely from this site in fact.
However, I'm not really clear what the store actually does. I mean, Intel is not really a "platform". I might optimize a server application for an Intel processor, but I'm not really going to develop for an Intel App Store.
I mean, what about those servers running AMD procs or those that are simply virtualized processing units? What about all of those smart phones running ARM procs?
I'm not sure if this problem was a marketing issue or just a really bad idea.

For me
1) Somebody replaced the disk in my Assassins Creed 4 box with a dreadful pirate/sailing sim
2) WCF

I was all excited for AC4.
The funny thing is I can't figure out why I hate it quite so much. I got about 2 hours in before I gave up. That's a lot of scratch on something I should've demoed somehow.

I was bought it for Xmas - and the reviews are very good
but so far it's not a AC game other than suffering from horrible controls - although they have surpassed themselves with this one - the weapon selector is the worst one yet.
I used to enjoy climbing iconic buildings - shacks and tree stumps just don't do it for me.
Stealth is horrible
The sailing/pirating nonsense should have been kept for a different IP
