Ahh, the RM 380Z. How I loved that machine. *nostalgic sigh*

The 380Z was, for a long time, my 'dream machine'. We had one at school and you could book 20 minute slots during the day. If you were early on Monday, you could book a whole after school session [1 hour max]. It helped that the booking sheet was kept by my form teacher in the form room and our class was the first one into the room each day. I normally had at least one afternoon with the coveted 380Z; even when the Beeb's came in I was faithful.

I was a BBC man (child/teenager). It was *so* good. BBC Basic @ 2MHz could outstrip QBASIC or whatever nonsense it was running at @ 8Mhz with 640K of RAM.
And then the Archimedes arrived which decimated every competitor. It wasn't possible to be a geek and not adore this machine - it could do so many things previously impossible. And it says something that the Microprocessor lives on even if Acorn doesn't.

My gf is a developer and she want to buy a new laptop for surfing and development, mostly vs2010 and vs2012. Do you think that surface will be ok for this kind of job or she would better get a normal laptop?
|
|
|
|
|
I think that depends on the power required and things like which keyboard you use.
Might be better off with a decent small ultrabook.

Surface pro, the dockingstation and an additional Monitor ? i´d recommend that

Hi Dave, in that video, the person is using a Surface 2 RT. I don't know what capabilities for .NET programming are available in RT, but I suspect a Surface Pro would be a better choice for someone wanting to program.

Hi Bill,
Yes I was aware that the video was an RT version, I was just showing that once you hook up a screen, keyboard, mouse, hdd you have a very versatile piece of kit. Yes, the Pro would be better.
cheers,

Why don't you let her decide what is a good machine for the kind of development she is doing.
I'd rather be phishing!

Surface Pro 2 is more than a tablet - it's the one that runs the desktop properly.

OK, so basically, it is a notebook with touchscreen.
/edit. Good God, $899 ??!!

Or, an ultrabook as they are now being classified.

Yes, that is what I meant actually.

Ultrabook is a specific Intel (trademarked) specification is it not?
This means you could still technically have a touchscreen notebook running an AMD processor which is not an Ultrabook.
|
|
|
|
|
That is correct, but for the purposes of specifying what the intent of the device is, Ultrabook is a convenient moniker.

Tablets are just normal notebooks without hardbound keyboards.
Windows 8 is a hybrid one. With one click you get into the App world and play games and in another click you can come back and work on excel with a crippled UI.
Just kidding. The Win8 tabs feel good on hand. Some improvements are certainly needed though. For a home user, its a total package of ester eggs & hide n seek game. My sister gave up on a simple challenge - "Try to shut down my W8 tablet in a minute" the basic options are not straight forward. Of course it's not just for tablets, in all W8 OSes versions in general.

Mmmhh... technically, yes, but I cannot install any program on my samsung galaxy, I don't have a file explorer ( what for anyway ?), etcc... I don't think this is possible from an iPad either...

Was just curious, Why do we need to install VS on a tablet ? We can do all the development work at desktop or laptop and then just deploy our app to tablet.
