The real question is, how the f*** does a runway and taxiway get joined to a publicly-accessible road? The moron who laid out the airport should be shot.

There are a lot of access roads leading to airports service areas and runways, usually they are all fenced off and locked.
And in all fairness, Fairbanks might not be such an important/strategic airport to have that high a security.
I'd rather be phishing!

Maximilien wrote: Fairbanks might not be such an important/strategic airport to have that high a security To my mind, this isn't a security issue, it's a safety issue, which has absolutely nothing to do with the prominence of the area served by the airport. I still believe this sounds like inept design of traffic flow around the airport.
I live in the area served by Dayton International Airport[^]. None of its taxiways or runways are accessible from public roads.

Apple's mapping app obviously still has issues... there is no denying.
The other thing that struck me about the article is the apparent ease at which civilian vehicles could access the airport's taxiways and runways. We routinely get irradiated and molested going through security but anyone can just drive up to the planes?

In Apple's defense, their route was shorter...
I agree with the other posts, how in the elephant does one just drive onto a runway from a public road?
It was broke, so I fixed it.

In fairness to Apple, until a few years ago both Mapquest and Google map services led me across the main runway of the Laughlin/Bullhead City International Airport anytime I tried to map a route east of here. The airport was built in 1986 or so, and the road specified was a dirt trail used by the US Army cavalry (yes, the one with horses) to carry supplies to Fort Mojave, where US troops were busily engaged in subduing the local Indian tribe and securing the resident beavers' hides for fashionable hats.
Perhaps both services would have been better off selecting more recent government maps for digitizing...
