I could have written that myself. My interest in professional sports evaporated by about eight or nine years of age.
The main draw - in reality - is the bonding with others who use "we" for the team as though they were really part of it. Thus, by memorizing statistics with what little brain they have available, they can discuss them and debate them with other like-minded vicarious "lovers".
Rather pathetic. Imagine if they put that much time, effort and attention into the actual world around them that has real impacts.

They should return to the original set of sports which were intended to highlight warrior traits, which would essentially restrict the available sports to track/field events. Team and "style" sports do not belong.

Yes, I agree, and in the classical attire of the time, but they should allow females to compete as well - in the same attire, of course!

With all the screaming about equality and allowing trans to compete in women's sports, there should be no "women"'s sports anymore, and everyone competes against everyone else. I mean, we're all about equality, right?
I have an idea for a new "sport" - underwater demolition. A swimmer must approach a target 500 meters away underwater, plant an explosive device, swim back, and detonate the device remotely. Points start at 100, with deductions being made every time the swimmer visibly breaks the surface of the water, for every minute it takes him/her to accomplish the task, and if the device does not detonate.

i was rather referring to the prurient interest displayed in the attire of the Swedish ladies in the beach volleyball, where they were penalized, presumably by a male judge, for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms. In the original Olympic games, all competitors were naked.

I will watch some of it (at least watch as much as I can due to timezone differences)
The only thing I don't like, is that we don't see less popular sports; and some of the new sports are weird.
Surfing ? Skateboard ? It might be fun to do, but as an Olympic sport ?

What makes those sports less qualified than some of the existing ones?

Using your logic, all sports even spit-wad competitions should be allowed in the Olympics.
Using your logic, including all sports in the entire world, the Olympics would probably take an entire year, every day, to complete; possibly longer.

What logic? I only asked a question. It wasn't intended to be rhetorical .
But if you want to discus the real reason why sports get added, then as per usual it's all about money. They will continue to add whatever sports they feel will bring in the most viewers/money.

Usually around the beach volleyball net.

Funny(more like sexist) thing about beach volleyball. The official international rules specify the MAXIMUM strap size in cm of the bathing suits.
I am surprised that no one has challenged that rule yet.

Agree.
In the past I've seen two games of Handball and really liked it. It's not a sport that we ever see down here. No coverage, no news, nothing.
So I'm hoping to see some coverage this time round. Our local channel that is broadcasting the games seems to be promising some good all-round coverage this time. Fingers crossed.

I haven't cared about the Olympics since just about as long as I can remember - perhaps longer.

Never cared about the Olympics, never will.
What I do remember from my high school years is that it allowed a girl with "Olympics aspirations", shall we say, to miss a lot of classes for training - and I mean a lot...and it made some jealous. All for...well, let's see...in the best case scenario, she'd get a medal, and perhaps a one-year contract with Disney to be part of their parades where she'd get to wave at people while wearing said medal.

I have massive respect and admiration for the athletes, coaches and the families and friends that support the insane efforts they make to push themselves to be the best. Not just the best in their country or the World, but the best that's ever been. The willpower, the sacrifice, and above all the shear focus of will is incredible.
However, it seems ego and commercialism has taken front seat to common sense. I understand that training plans are done in a way that an athlete will peak at a certain date, and changing the dates can and will affect training (and lifestyle, and funding, and jobs...) but it will affect everyone equally.
Why not simply say "We're still not OK. We can wait". Let's have a celebration of health and vitality rather than doing this thing while the world is still very much in the grips of the pandemic.
cheers

Yep. 71 Covid cases linked to Olympics already, and Japan in the grip of a fourth wave ... just pointless - it's all about the money (and not getting caught cheating drugs tests or you lose that revenue stream).

One thing in favor of doing it no matter what. A lot of the infrastructure they build, especially the housing, is repurposed after the games. There could be a lot of people in Tokyo waiting for the competition to be over so they can move in.
