Hi All,
Since Covid-19 or 'The Virus' hit the UK last year for a variety of reasons I have been stuck with my Mum, working from home as a new starter at a company I have had to be careful to ensure people see what I am or trying to do. All seems good, but now I have come across an issue, I have to 'take' Mum to the doctors for a blood test, normally she would drive not a problem. At the moment shes finding driving awkward due to a strained muscle in her back. So I can skive off, be honest and tell people I wont be around for an hour and work an hour later(my preferred option) or take the morning as Holiday?
What Would Bob Do?

Simple choice:
1. Be honest and tell your boss why you need some time off.
2. Lie and risk getting the sack.
|
|
|
|
|
Hmm, thats what I was thinking
|
|
|
|
|
Be forward... don't lie.
Missing 1 hour for personal issue should be a no-brainer in most instances company; just work an hour later another day.
Just put a message on your instant messenger app of choice : "I'll be away for one hour, can be reached in case of emergencies at xxx"
I'd rather be phishing!

You posted what I would have.
Add into the mix is that he's probably considered a "salaried worker" which give the company the advantage of no overtime and such since it's not considered hourly wages.
So - they should give him the hour without a second thought. Putting aside for the moment that as a comparative new-hire he's trying to impress (and stay employed), it's a sure thing they don't pay him when he works past the official "quitting time".
It becomes a good test as to whether or not the companies worth a career.

Well I had an interview pre-covid with this company (last year) and then they had a big draw back of staff, due to their markets being reduced, lots of people left. I post getting the chop from my employer was offered a rolling contract to help them out of the mire they were in. So thinking it might turn permenant... so tell people, don't bill them for the hour (I wasn't) or work over time (so I can get 8 hours)

I think people wouldn't mind, but just checking...

Bob would put Griff's cat to work and sneak away, the only problem would be that they might notice a considerable improvement in the quality of work

Tell them what needs to be done and put in the extra hour (and say so).
All my remote work was under contract though; it was mostly about keeping ahead of the client; which usually meant mostly less than 40; or 37.5; or whatever is the norm these days.
It was only in wine that he laid down no limit for himself, but he did not allow himself to be confused by it.

Bloody silly question, you know what to do, if the company won't support you taking you mum to the doctor then you need to go back to the pub while you look for another job.

Just to let you and others know how it turned out, asked permission to miss an hour this morning 'Ill work later', reply was 'You don't need to, you have done more than we asked of you, so far'. I have a feeling that going in tomorrow to repair a bit of kit that failed in a test meant that ordering another hugely expensive bit of kit for a circuit board that failed has made the bean counter happy. All is good!! (plus can't go to the pub at the moment, covid and all!)

Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars (Official NASA Video) - YouTube[^] - in real time, the actual last three-and-a-half-minutes of delivery phase of the mission.
What gets me, the heat shield detaches at about 10Km above the surface, and from then on we can see the actual Mars surface. And for a planet with an atmosphere (albeit a load thinner than Earth's) that's a lot of craters: old ones, new ones, weathered ones, fresh(ish) ones ... everywhere is craters until you get too close to see the big ones ...
