I just learned something wonderful today. I always thought a "jiffy" was just a term meaning "a short time". I use it all the time. I never knew that it actually means[citation needed] the period of time between alternating power cycles (so 1/50 or 1/60th of a second)
cheers,

I always thought it was actually 1/100th of a second.

To me, jiffy has always been bubblewrap.
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.

Also
"In computing, a jiffy is the duration of one tick of the system timer interrupt. It is not an absolute time interval unit, since its duration depends on the clock interrupt frequency of the particular hardware platform."

I've been an electrical engineer for over 30 years, and never heard the term "jiffy" applied to the period of an ac current cycle before. It hertz to think about it, so a citation is definitely needed.

Neat. Another interesting one is "peruse", which is commonly used to mean "look over casually and quickly", while it actually means "read or examine thoroughly, carefully, or at length."

Celibate does not mean avoiding sex.
One can be celibate but have lots of sex.
Celibate only means 'Unmarried'.
Who knew?
Although it does explain what is meant by the priesthood being celibate.
