I would like to buy a recent version of Photoshop, since I am still using an old photoshop 7 version, and an upgrade may be interesting. But what a price jungle ! CS5 or CS6 versions are available from 199€ to ... 1497€ ( the exact same version, no student or whatever special version).
So now, what is the price of this software, exactly ??? Maybe I should try and find some CS3 or 4 versions, these should be quite cheap (but hard to find).

Yeah, heard of it, but is Gimp a "real" product ? I am fed up of "copycat" linux tools which require DOS windows in the background and all kind of tricks to run under Windows, have fancy keyboard shortcuts (Shift + T to copy ? Really ?) and crash every other minute.

I use it in WXP and it runs native and has normal short cuts. It's a good product for every day work such as cropping and touch ups. Depending on what extent you use paintshop, it may well be worth your time.
Caveat - I use v2.8.0, the latest stable is v2.8.2.

I still use PaintShop Pro Version 9 - the last version before Corel bought it.
Why? It was a tenth the price of Adobe, works really, really well, and Corel hadn't bought it. And thus hadn't had a chance to remove all the usability features and insert the bugs for which they are so well famed.
It still runs fine under Win7 (although it turns Aero off temporarily while it is running) and I see no reason to change, yet.

You wouldn't happen to be running 32-bit Win 7, would you? The reason I ask is that in 64-bit Win7, I find that PSP9 will quite often crash when I crop or run scripts. Which is really annoying, because I much prefer it over Photoshop or GIMP.

No - 64 bit @ SP1
Have you checked your display drivers? I don't get any problems cropping (but I don't run scripts).

The latest Paint Shop Pro (X5) is either $40 or $60, depending on whether it will accept v9 for upgrade purposes.

I know - but it's a Corel product, and they seem to specialize in making products harder to use, and more buggy. It's as if they actively hate their users...

The main caveat I've heard on switching is that gimp's designed around a different mental model than photoshop. While the geek model is probably closer to how you naturally think than adobe's artist model if you go beyond trivial use there's going to be a significant relearning curve.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

You really should give GIMP a try.

I can't stress how sensible a suggestion that is. While my regular use doesn't extend far beyond cropping, resizing, transparency, compression and a bit of magic wand, there's nothing I haven't been able to do with GIMP yet and while that remains the case, I don't see any reason for actually paying for a commercial tool.

Have a look at Photoshop Elements as well, should be cheaper.

Does it have layers ? And masking ? And patch tools ? Is it better than paint.net ?
