I can usually manage 4 hours if I actually set aside eight... Some nights are better than others. I'm the same way at work, unless I get bored for whatever reason... Then I start to drift.

Eh, work doesn't bug me... Work is work, and will always be there tomorrow. It's my personal life that keeps me up. Any time I make a significant decision or change my mind on something non-trivial, my brain apparently has to process that new chain of events to try to recalculate all of the possible outcomes and generate contingency plans...
At least that's what kept me up last night, while I'm laying there trying to get it to shut up. Stupid brain...

I blame the insomnia.

I get that occasionally when I'm trying to get to sleep but my brain tries to calculate every possible outcome. Luckily it's pretty rare, and usually there's a much simpler (and obvious) solution the next morning.
I wonder how many other people get this?
How do you know so much about swallows? Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

Oh, it's not just that there's a better solution... It's that in this case, it latched onto one event that probably has <5% chance of happening, and tried to calculate every branch of THAT.
It's like deciding I'm going to go out for dinner tomorrow, and trying to calculate a detailed contingency plan in case I get food poisoning... I mean that wasn't the situation, but you get the idea...
So pointless... I hate my brain.

Yep, sounds familiar.. I'd bet it's pretty common

I get that too, not that often any more. In high school it happened all the time, but I had stressful circumstances for a year and a half and afterwards I had to make myself not do this all the time - it became a habit.
It still happens sometimes, losing sleep and only sleeping for about three hours for a few nights.
Sometimes I remember something embarrassing that already happened and that keeps me up.
At those times my caffeine intake significantly increases.

I'm currently unsupervised, I know it freaks me out too but the possibilities are endless.
