There is only one creature in the world that would build such a thing- It must have been built by a brilliant cat to keep us occupied while it gets its bare minimum of 15 hours sleep every day.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.
His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

Hi all,
Still finding what will be my next laptop...
And I've seen some have removed the Ethernet port.
Given I use it often, I was thinking on using this Lenovo USB-C to Ethernet Adapter | Adapters | Lenovo US[^] in case I end with a laptop without the Ethernet port.
In the office I will have a dock station. When I'm on the go, if I have to connect to one robot, PLC,... I will mostly use it.
Have you used any? In case you've done, which has been your experience with that?
Thank you all!

Some laptops (purchased new) include their own USB to Ethernet dongle. Though not sure if that's still the common practice.
Haven't used the device you mention, but I've used others (typically the ones that come with the laptop) and it's transparent and fast.
For example, I use the Ethernet port on the Plugable USB Docking Station both at home and at in the office (which means at home now.) Never had any issues.

And maybe a strange question... is that USB C adapter strongly plugged to the pc?
I mean in the field I would not like to have it unplugged because it is not strong enough to hold the ethernet cable weight.
Sorry for the strange question.
Thank you!

No, it's a standard USB cable, so easily unplugged. Fortunately the cable is short so I don't trip over it (I have other things I occasionally trip over, as I deal with a lot of hardware, and even sitting on my desk, some cables are rather long. Hmmm, I should tie them up.)
As to the Ethernet port itself, it's the typical "snap in place" thing.
Geez, how heavy is your ethernet cable?
|
|
|
|
|
Not heavy... it's that when I'm doing a set up of one machine (robot, CNC or PLC) I never know where I will seat (if I seat at all) and usually the cable is a long one that I roll over the table leg before plugging into the laptop itself...
^^¡
Thank you very much for your comments!

I use one for similar (PLCs, SCADA, DCS) - it works fine on a desk but dangling out the side of the laptop it doesn't feel as secure as a dedicated ethernet port on the laptop, though it hasn't failed yet! (tempting fate?) And of course they're one more thing to remember to stick in your bag. Aside, they're also useful to have as well as a 'proper' port, e.g. if you need to set it up for a different network...

Have used one before years to have a second network connection to control measurements units. I don't remember the brand but it was very easy and unproblematic.
It does not solve my Problem, but it answers my question

The USB to ETH I am using now is normal USB 3.0 to ETH, it annoys me a bit because in Win10 Enterprise I can't have it parallel to WiFi, I need to switch the flight mode on to get a stable communication with the PLC. But I think the problem is from the OEM Enterprise Client, not in Windows 10 itself.
In Win7 there was no problem at all, I could be in the field connected to the PLC and still google for something or get files from server, I now have to switch over for each silly thing...
Beyond that, the gadget works pretty nice. It is from the company Lindy.
A coworker of mine had a Workstation laptop with USB-C and the "docking station" was aprox 12x4x2,5 cm (maybe a bit bigger, but really not that big) and maybe a 10 or 15 cm cable. It looked pretty cool, but I have never had one myself.
