Well, the first song that played for me was by the Hanson Brothers, so I think we can exclude 1997 as one of the golden years.

I disagree. Music was different, but better or worse is not easy to compare, given the different socio-economic circumstances and the availability of different technology for playing and recording. Not to mention counter-movements to "popular music" in a specific area. But it is nice to look back every now and again

Good music is timeless. Look at Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi. Their recording technology was a piece of paper.

Of course. But how can you measure something timeless, when it hasn't had enough time to be nostalgic yet? Given that nostalgia is remembering only the good stuff from the past. Even if you go to the 50's -that's what 66 years? Against roughly 300 years? That's a biased point of view in my opinion. And a lot of music from the 50's is still remembered now and listened to by younger generations. Current music cannot be timeless, since it's just been made. That just isn't a fair criteria for me.

You do have some songs later then the 50's that are timeless.
Queen's 'The Show Must Go On', for example.
I do have to think harder to get something like that later than the 80's, though.
(Mostly because I am old )
Anyhow, music very often trigger memories and sometimes you have a good memory associated with the most horrific or ridiculous songs.

Anyway I don't know, but all the kids who are now 6 to 16 (and have no taste whatsoever) might still listen to Bieber for a while to come

If I could predict the future I would either be stinking rich or spending my money as fast as I could.
Let's hope you are wrong about Bieber, otherwise the future might be like in Demolition Man where the only music people listens to are jingles for the likes of MacDonalds etc.
