The law of unintended consequences...
So this man saves all these lives, but who is going to feed them?
Improving the life chances of people is admirable but is meaningless if they continue to have lots of children then die of starvation.
If he really wants to improve their lives he should be encouraging them to stop breeding and to move to places where food actually grows.
The population of Ethiopia is over double that of when they had the famine of the early 80's.
If the famine struck now, how many more would die?
Simply stopping them dying of one thing does not mean they won't die of something else.
There needs to be a discussion on birth control and population levels.
The world has limited resources and more people means that these rare resources are used up at an ever increasing rate.
I foresee wars over water in the next few years.

As far as I know a lot of that money is being spent towards family planning awareness. He is also heavily involved in sponsoring crop research. One of the grains that he favors is sorghum, a very drought resistant crop. Having grown up on a farm and seen sorghum in dry years, I can attest thereto  .
Some research have also shown that if there is less illness and early deaths, the population tend to become more educated and less likely to want big families. How valid it is I don't quite know.
I think we need more dams so that we can have more irrigation as well, else we will definitely have wars over water. Africa gets more than enough water in certain places, so thagt it can produce more than enough food for the whole continent and have surplus... It is just a matter of using what we get.
