I used to rename lots of MP3 files (they HAD to be in a correct format or my brain couldn't cope  ) and then I preferred no extensions, as renaming is a lot easier when not worrying about extensions.
I never really needed extensions anyway, so I always had that option on.
Then I became a developer and turned it on after about a week.
Extensions are so much more important when you're actually doing work...

2. Setup.exe
3. Show file extensions!

The default settings are not made for programmers - they're outnumbered. If an "office" user could see the extension along with the file name, he could easily change both. His document is "lost" because the system can no longer associate a program. He will call for help...  (I do change the settings on my own computer).

Like you, I almost always disable that "feature". As a programmer I think it's important to know exactly what types of files you're dealing with, if indeed they actually have a file extension.
Not sure about the history of this so-called feature, but I think it dates back to the days of Windows 95 when Uncle Bill (as I like to sarcastically refer to Microsoft) wanted to make all PCs easily accessible for the relative no-nothing user.
It's not Microsoft's most annoying feature, but it's up there. Almost as irritating as the (thankfully) now defunct Microsoft Office Assistant, which in my view was a contradiction in terms on a global scale.

I'm continually amazed that hiding extensions is still the default. Big security hole.

It looks like you accidentally disabled the "Hide extensions of know types" feature. Would you like help with that?

not just tell me the extensions. But tell me where the hidden files are. Oh and the system files. YES I do want/NEED to know where they are. I have had some real issues in not knowing a file was where it was supposed to be. And yes I want the ext. I actually use text not the little icon picture over there.
And furthermore I want a menu and I want windows 98 SE. <grin>
That last was almost a truth. The first part was certainly true.

I unhide extensions on every computer I touch, I don't care if it's mine or not. This "feature" was a boon the virus industry. ClickMe.exe...
It's right up there with book burning. Keeping people stupid is not a good strategy.

It is on my list of required changes when setting up any pc.
If you are just a home user, do it manually. If you are in an IT department, make it part of your image or a setting as part of your OS Deployment process.

Hah! That's the first thing that I change on a new PC... then I take a screenshot of the desktop, set it as the desktop background, and auto-hide the taskbar.

Completely agree - I show all extensions also. MS tries to make fools from users - we resist. Same idiotic conception is "Desktop" - never ever used it! Reason is simple - IT IS ALWAYS HIDDEN behind working windows.
