Why?
We've known about Mitochondrial Eve[^] since the 80's, and there have been a couple of Y-chromosomal Adams[^] over the long term.
We know this is a dangerous place to live, and that every now and then the planet does it's best to get rid off all species: Snowball Earth[^], Supervolcanos[^], Asteroid impacts[^], Pandemics[^], etc.
So when we were setting out from Africa, it probably didn't take much to trim the population to really tiny levels.

I disagree. First of all, it is clickbait;
"All humans are descended from just TWO people and a catastrophic event almost wiped out ALL species 100,000 years ago, scientists claim"; lets see that claim in the story, and which catastrope they talk about.
Nope; they take another well-documented extinction and talk about that. Now comes the origin of the title;
"The study has been misunderstood by some religious parties who thought it meant that we all came into being in some seminal Big Bang-typed event 100,000 ago, but this isn't what the findings actually suggest."
So, to clarify; 100.000 years ago there was an catastrophe, but they don't explain which. Yes, modern humans can be traced back to a few entities. I say a "few", because there is Neanderhtal-genes in me, and those predate your Eva which is the grandmother of modern man (so, no, a western man cannot be traced to a single adam), which makes the title wrong.

I'm sure like me your inbox is inundated with "Black Friday" specials, even got a $30 coupon from newegg (min spend $70) because their site went down for a few hours yesterday.
firstly I don't get this whole "Black Friday" stuff -- the deals mostly start on Saturday (midnight between Friday and Saturday) and end on midnight Sunday (just before Monday)
- and that's not considering the "pre Black Friday" deals that started last Monday
Ohh that would be nice, that's just too cheap to miss, a spare one of those would be useful...
