I tried that. I lost a ton of weight and kept it off. My wife complains I am too bony. There's nothing left for me to lose.

Christian Graus wrote: they inject you with hormones
If it's for real, it could possibly be more than a bit unhealthy, but it can take years before the side effects kicks in. Not everybody react in the same way, so while most will experience little or no side effects, a few can get into severe trouble.

It's a complicated issue that boils down to two major points that have to be considered for any therapy: safety and effectiveness.
In terms of the safety aspect, it's really, really questionable. What are in these injections? How have they been studied? Who monitors the contents to see if it matches what is supposed to be in them? The marketing in a lot of this stuff assumes that "natural" must be safer than pharmaceuticals - but pharmaceuticals, for all their downsides, are extensively studied for negative effects. And really, anything that can have a purported positive effect can have a negative effect. For example, giving someone extra thyroid hormone (natural or unnatural) will certainly make them lose weight by giving them a higher metabolism. However, it will also give them tremor, heat intolerance, and possibly cause a cardiac arrest. Hell, poison ivy is "natural" and it doesn't mean it's safe to eat, drink, or inhale.
In terms of the effectiveness, well to me that's a smaller issue - because committing to something and paying $1500 can be a psychological motivator for it to "work" even if said substance is just tapwater. The philosophical implications of buying into magical thinking and placebo effects as an actual treatment is a rather longer discussion.

This is a somewhat dangerous approach but since you've lost all your excess weight I assume you can run faster ; but ask if she gained or lost weight the last time she was full of pregnancy hormones and ask her why she thinks thinks injecting herself with them will cause her to lose weight this time.
Also, the 500calorie/day diet is well below starvation level and requires close medical supervision. Has she talked to her normal physician about this yet?

My big concern is that my daughter is doing it, too. Yes, that question had occurred to me. Why will pregnancy hormones make her want to eat less ?

How old is your daughter? IIRC she's only in her teens; and screwing around with hormones before your bodies fully developed is a horrible idea.

Christian - it is all bullshit.
Get her to go on a completely sugar free diet (no exercise). I guarantee she will lose weight - and for free.
http://www.bookworld.com.au/book/sweet-poison-why-sugar-makes-us-fat/3288814/?gclid=COaa6LftmLQCFeRMpgodOxUA2Q[^] - I highly recommend this book - it has changed our families life.
My brother-in-law has lost twenty kilos while lying on the couch.
All of my wife's stomach/intestinal problems have disappeared since she cut out all white sugar from her diet.
It is not easy but the benefits are measurable.

That is the book I read and followed. You are right, I lost 18 kg without doing any exercise, and have kept it up.

Hi Andy..
Tempted to get that book. But more tempted to rush out and buy a donut that looks like the one on the cover
Actually I am keen to lose weight... this might be a good solution - but would be a major challenge for me sticking to it indefinitely

Hi Ashley, how ya doin?
The diet in the book IS hard to stick to, however the benefits far outweigh any desire to eat sugar after a while (It just tastes way too sweet!) We use the princples of the book along with the Low Fodmap Diet - works wonders for my lovely wife (who you have met).

Clearly has worked for you both... the proof is in the pudding Well.. no more pudding I guess. Ever I will give it a go I think... I need to do something decisive. Although some people I know swear by Atkins-type diet - high protein, no carbs.

Not quite correct You can substitute sugar with an artificial sweetener (if you can handle the metallic taste), or you can use dextrose or glucose instead. Shirl makes a mean pavlova with dextrose!
The key is to avoid the fructose.

A surprising number of women (my wife included) will, when pressed, admit that they KNOW that 'diets' don't work long term, but that doesn't stop them hoping the latest 'quick fix' will do the trick.
The amount of time and effort the wife has put into losing weight in the past proves she can do it, but the thing that never seems to 'stick' is that it has to be a life change not something you do for a while and then stop.
The other thing we (men) don't have to contende with is the hormonal swings - and I don't think we ever really appreciate what that does to your appetite.
But I can also vouch for cutting out refined sugar - it doesn't matter how much exercise I do, I don't lose wieght unless I cut out the sugar.
