so i got a best buy gift certificate. that store is awful. and the "salesmen" are constantly trying to sale people things that not only they do not need, but do not make sense. it is funny to watch some of them try to justify things because you can tell on their face, they do not believe the crap they are saying.
on a lighter note, i picked up the starcraft battlechest and spent the entire night invading star systems with my battle cruisers.
so tired

8:00PM last Thursday, i was fixing an ancient computer for a friend. Decided to throw some more RAM in before returning it, since 128MB is a bit low for running XP. Jumped on my scooter, rode through the rain to Best Buy, arriving 10 minutes before closing time. Walked in the door and was greeted instantly and directed to the appropriate section, while the greeter paged a salesman to assist me. The kid arrived at about the time i found the memory aisle, asked what i was looking for, checked the nearby kiosk to verify that what they had would work, and handed me the package. I sped to the checkout, paid the money, and was out the door - about 5min total time spent.
YMMV...

Are they getting commissions again? Last i heard, they were just badgering kids into parroting the marketing.
I do remember the commissioned sales people though, back in the early '90s before they were quite as large. Those guys were assholes - i'd walk in, a skinny kid in clean but simple clothing, looking for parts... and they'd refuse me the time of day if there was anyone else around. I still remember being told to stop whining about a drive kit i'd purchased which was missing the mounting hardware, because, "you got a good deal on it".
I laughed with glee when they dropped commission and fired the lot of 'em. Would be a shame if they brought it back.

i was under the impression they were commissioned.
i know of several similar stores that are, at least in my area. phone sales are another area that have commissions.

No, they aren't commissioned but they are SEVERELY pressed to sell those warranty plans. Of course that was a few years back when I worked there. They would actually make you say to the customer that you weren't on commission when you introduced yourself but as a worker you felt like you were because if you didn't sell a certain number of plans it hurt your performance review. You decide if that's working on commission.

Bestbuy sucks so much I can't tell you.
I purchased a monitor online at 12:00PM for in store pick up. I went to the store at 7:00 PM even though I didn't have a confirmation order which takes an average of 45 minutes according to the website. When I got to the store they told me it wasn't ready yet. I said can I just pick one up off the shelf and exchange it. He said sure go ahead. I found the monitor on display, but the box was out of sight. I waited for over 20 minutes and asked two employees. I said, is there no way I can spend my money for a product in your store. They said you'll have to wait for the one sales guy who helping some hot girl fill out a credit application. Needless to say he was taking as long as possible. After 30 minutes in the store I left with no monitor, even though I purchased the thing online 7hours earlier. I found a better deal at Office Depot and canceled the order with no trouble but still, I am NEVER stepping foot in a BestBuy again for the rest of my life!
I didn't get any requirements for the signature

BB's not bad if you avoid the salespeople. keep your head down, run to the item you want, grab it. run to the register and pay as quickly as you can. say "no" to every question they ask. do not go there in the month of December.

I've had pretty decent experiences at BB to date. Not perfect by any stretch but not bad either. Way better than Circuit City.

Totally agree.
One of my oldest daughter's favorite stories is when I lost my temper at a salesman at Circuit City while trying to buy a washing machine.
OTOH, Circuit City now has (had?) a very good return policy.

Best Buy is great if you are frugal... I get them to price match other shops (match price + 10% off the differences in prices). I love it when Best Buy have the highest prices. (Great for DSLR Lenses and what not.)

My only good experience I've ever had with Best Buy was recently when I purchased a video card and had the price drop 110$ the next weekend. I have never been more satisfied than walking into a best buy with a reciept and walk out with an extra 117$ (cost + tax) in my pocket without returning anything (they price match for 30 days).
On the other hand, my roomate recently purchased a 42in LCD HDTV. Best Buy was literally 650$ more (1599 vs 949) than the electronics store across the street on the same TV. Price match is one thing but when a store is that clueless or hoping that thier consumers will be that stupid, I would rather they go out of business instead of giving them mine.

If you want a real laugh go to similar stores in the UK (Currys anyone?) and ask about HDMI cables

Lemmie guess, they try and tell you you'll get a better digital picture if you if you pay 10x as much for the Moronster gold plated super duper mega ultra premium double plus shinier wonder cables.

Phew, I'll never forget that lesson...my cable guy came in to diagnose some problems I was having...his first recommendation was "remove the gold-plated cable...the connection does not perform as well with a gold connector."

It varies. I've been treated very professionally by my local Best Buy. Granted, I've only been in there a half-dozen times, but it's always been a pleasant, friendly experience. They also treated my daughter very well when she bought her laptop.
For me, it's a tie between Office Max and Circuit City as to the worse shopping experience.

I went to Best Buy a few months ago looking for an HDMI cable for my new HDTV. I figured something in the $12 to $25 range. I was shocked to come across their Monster Cable line for around $125. So I asked one of the sales guys where the "cheap" HDMI cables were. He lead me around the aisle where the "cheap" $75 cables were. Needless to say, no sale, and I went home and bought one online from Amazon for about $10. I later found out that Best Buy is notorious for pushing the Monster Cable line of insanely overpriced crap. I'll never go back there again.
