Consider the following...
9/11 (not having this argument again).
7/7 London
21/7 London
Bali Bombings
Shoe Bomber
The Srinagar Bombing
US Consulate Bombing in Karachi
The Haifa Bus Massacre
Riyadh Compound Bombings
Gateway of India (Mumbai) Bombings
The Glasgow Airport Attack
As you see from this VERY TINY SELECTION there have been a lot of islamic terror attacks.
Therefore anyone who looks even vaguely like they may be islamic is going to be viewed with suspicion.
Mind you, if you do get on a train and cannot find a seat, simply pull out a prayer mat, a koran and start wailing allah akbar and you will have a whole carriage to yourself.

Yes I always feel safe in the knowledge that if a Muslim did blow up a Bus as long as I wasn't sat on the seat directly next to him I'd be safe.

What do you mean by looking islamic? Does Nish look islamic? Do all indians? (I can't tell the difference between chinese and japanese or several other east asians, is it the same as that?)
Anyway, I'm not (and don't think I look) islamic. I doubt this is anything to do with terror attacks. Does it matter whether you are sitting next to a bag full of semtex, or 10 feet away?

In all honestly, to the majority of Britons(and I guess that is where you are), YES you do. I can tell the difference between an Indian and a Arab and I reckon I could even tell the difference between an Indian and a Pakistani 75% of the time. Unfortunately most people, or at least half of them would think an Indian is a Muslim.
I doubt you could tell the difference between an Englishman and A French man, or even an English man and a German, whereas us white people can.
I expect you could even tell what part of India someone comes from just by looking at them with reasonable accuracy?

You probably mean white Europeans (and probably black ones too).
Americans can usually identify the Brits, but are not very good at identifying people from other parts of Europe.

You racist bastard
_Peeves wrote: Anyway, I'm not (and don't think I look) islamic.
That's what all the terrorists on the bus say.

all that matters is why you brought it on the bus in the first place.

I have to laugh at this, I'm 6`3, born in Oz with cauc heritage going back a long way (so I'm white) but I wear a full beard, I was asked if I was Islamic in a Yangon market a number of years ago by a very dodgy looking character. All it took was a bushy beard and a slight tan to invoke the stereotype.

I'm canadian, I take the train to work every day, and I sit next to foreigners every day and they sit next to me because in Canada, we're all technically foreigners...
I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.

And it is the Chinese who behead people on Canadian buses.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Even if its alien, I don't care. (no wait... I will give priority to good looking girls, otherwise)

Which part of the world you are in?
I have spend 5 years in US and I never faced any racism, not even once, not even slightest. (and I cannot guaranty any American/Foreigner about this kind of friendly behavior in India, I know... strange right!).
Sometimes it's our mindset, just look around you, is this happening to every dark skinned person in the public transport? .....I dont think so...

Also, our day to day attitudes in the US are different from what I gathered. Even more so in big cities. So, in a place like the public transport, they don't like anyone. Also, most people don't like people "bird doggin" them.
If you want to take something as racist/personal we'll give you plenty of opportunities. However, from my experience, it's not usually meant that way.
Do keep in mind that there are racist sunshines everywhere. I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about people in general.

Maybe not in the US, since there are people from practically every country in the world. Around here, everyone looks the same.

You only have one color of people? Holy cow, that must be boring. How do you find your friends? Tell who is going to suicide bomb? or know who is going to rob you?
Just seems boring, that's all I'm sayin.

I also prefer not to sit next to: fat people, unwashed people, junkies, and people in general. The relative weights of these preferences are not entirely clear even to myself.

If at all possible no. Nothing to do with foreigner though, I'd prefer not to sit next to anyone. Having people inside arms length annoys me, even if they are the same color. I always attempt to sit alone, and also give other people their own space.

Perhaps it is the needy way your eyes flit from boarding passenger to boarding passenger, yearning "please sit next to me" that is putting people off. Or you live in Alabama.

Never mind foreigners people don't like to sit next to anybody here. On the local trains the seats are in blocks if 4 (Two seats facing two other seats), and what usually happens is that people will primarily try to sit in an empty block (on a seat next to the window) the next person after that will sit on the opposite side next to the aisle. Once those two seats are taken it seems people would rather stand than sit next to somebody else, leaving half of the seats empty.
|
|
|
|

Not here though. There are rare exceptions where the seats are arranged as you say. They are close enough that your knees touch the person before you if you're over 5' tall. Bloody genius who thought of putting them that way.

this makes perfect sense for me. Then the occupied seats should be given to elderly, women, and children.
