As you may recall it was my 40th in December, my close friends clubbed together and gave me a voucher for a local jewellers to go towards a new watch.
So I spent the last month trawling the web looking for candidates.
I had original made up my mind on a Breitling SuperOcean Heritage Chronograph, (similar to this but in black dial and face, http://www.thewatchgallery.co.uk/shop/breitling-superocean-heritage-46mm-blue-a1332016-c758.html[^]) but the wife really hated the mesh bracelet.
So today, headed into town and looked at the watch, as well as a few other options, in the end the jeweller showed me the new Breitling for Bently Barnato 42 Special Edition. It was slightly smaller face, but did sit really nice on my wrist. The wife also had no complaints and much preferred it.

Oh, well that was it....pass the credit card, by the time I took of the gift voucher and the discount from the jeweller, it didn't hurt as much, or at least that is what I keep telling myself 
The only downside is the wife was spotting watches for herself on display, having a feeling she will be pushing for one for herself soon...  Well it is our 10th Wedding anniversary this year. Maybe I can get another one out of this as well?

Why can't I have friends like that? Those are bloody expensive pieces!
I get my watches from the local superstore, I'm so damned hard on them. I bought one of those supposedly indestructible watches, lasted for about a year, it still runs but very battle scarred from working on vehicles, building things and what-not. If I take them off they're as good as gone.
But I still have one of these[^]!

Just so you don't feel too great about your purchase, consider that you could probably sponsor an entire family in [some poor region] for years for what that watch cost.
I bought a watch 5 years ago for $30, and was upset that I had to spend $30 recently for a battery and watch case press (because I couldn't get the darn cover back on the watch).

I work damn hard, away from my family for half the year, and if i choose to spend some of my hard earned cash on some luxuries, I will. I am very selective about who I donate to, and tend to sponsor those that go out of their way to earn it. e.g. One of the guys offshore was a rather large chap, both height and width, never ran a marathon before and he did the New York marathon. Another one of the guys did the Marathon des Sables, 6 day marathon (151 miles) across the Sahara desert, carrying all his supplies. They are worthy sponsors.
My last watch (was 110 ukp) has lasted my about 15 years, and that is being worn every day, both onshore and offshore, and has taken a right battering. Never had a service, changed the batteries myself about 5 times now), which was interesting as the back needed some special tools that I didn't have, and improvised with a flat head screwdriver and a hammer

I first tried with 2 pliers and a sock, but had to resort to the proper tool. Probably would have been a better idea to just bring it to a professional and get it done for $10.

I have a love/hate relationship with watches.
I love them, but I cannot stand having something hanging on my wrist.
I've always found the classic Movado watch really beautiful.
If money was not an issue, I'd get myself one Bell&Ross[^] watch

Nice choice. I love the look of some of the Breitling watches, but they are WAY beyond my current financial situation. 
I am currently wearing this[^]. Fossils are pretty cheap, but they look nice to people that don't know watches.

Ugly - way too busy with fancy borders and multiple little dials that you need glasses to see, nope I like something severe and elegant with the minimum of bits that is easy to read. But then if we all liked the same thing it would be downright boring.

Sweet choice, Dave!
I've given up on wearing watches, or jewelry of any kind. It's far too dangerous in my work, sticking one's hands into boxes filled with 25kV charged conductors whilst hopong none of them bite. Dangly bits of metal on the extremities would just be tempting an already malevolent Fate.

I know what you mean.
Out offshore policy on jewellery is if you can see it, remove it/cover it up. The exception is a wrist watch however. And given that live conductor working is generally a no no, the probability of such an event is much reduced.
Me, I have always hated the ziggy zaggs. After I completed my first 2 years of my apprenticeship, because I had done so well across the 4 trades, I could choose which one I wanted to specialise in, fortunately I chose instruments and not electrical. When I watch the guys touching busbars to prove dead (even though they have tested first with test equipment), I still get an uneasy feeling.
