Either I got a really slow day, or a part of what you wanted to say went lost on the way from your brain to the keyboard.
I will never again mention that Dalek Dave was the poster of the One Millionth Lounge Post, nor that it was complete drivel.

Take a look at the title of the thread: "Just want to share". That's the first part.
Asking yourself how it will be received: Pause for a moment and ask yourself if others will appreciate the thread. Very often, if it's a he said/she said type of thread, it really doesn't go down too well with others.

I told Griff that just the other day. I said, threads about he said / she said aren't well received. And he said, "aren't they?", and I said "no" and he said "I didn't know that" and I threw a fridge at him!

I assume the fridge was holding no chocolate?

Of course. Most likely the lack of chocolate was the primary reason for throwing it at all.

Some days I think not.

I have a windows application which is similarly named to another application and has a very similar purpose. It's been suggested that I rename my app to avoid confusion, but what do I do about the version number?
Resetting it to 1.0.0 would imply that it's a new application, which it isn't, but keeping the current version might confuse users as to where the previous versions are.
Are there any marketing types out there who have seen similar situations?

New product name should not mean resetting the product number. In the release notes you should say it has been renamed as one of the changes.
Simples.

It's fine to keep the version number where it is with the rebrand. The internal version numbers for applications like Visual Studio and Office bear absolutely no resemblance to the various name changes that these applications have gone through.

I guess this is a good way to ask for troubles.

This has been seen a lot in the past, and solved with either renaming (without version change) or rebranding.
Here one of many examples[^]

Ever seen WinWord 3 through 5?
Version numbers just aren't important. Unless you're dealing with a file format/layout, in which case you should never decrease.
You'll never get very far if all you do is follow instructions.

If the current app is "ABC 1.2.3", you could rename it to "XYZ 2.0.0". In reality, the only change would a change in name, but it gives you a clean starting base. Just be sure to send a clear message to your customers informing them about the change.
