It's been quite a while since he was involved with the software, and I seem to recall him repudiating the direction it took.

Consider this: in tax evasion there's a paper trail. For example, spending or savings vs. stated income. That's why money-laundering is so popular*
Perhaps, for shootings - they just clean up their brass.
