Read in a news article that, China is spending almost 50 billion dollars on defense for this year which is larger than US. Not able to understand why that much...is there 3rd world war on the way...

Unfortunately, no. The story was one of those nuclear armageddon aftermath bits that were popular during the Cold War. I don't remember the story itself, just the closing line.
