Reminds me of a discussion (argument) which may have happened in real life or perhaps even here.
Why do Champagne bottles (except Cristal) have concave bases?
A. For strength
B. For stacking
C. To make the bottle appear bigger
Genuine question, I can't remember the answer.

The flat bottom will create drag. the rounded sides will allow smooth transition of fluid round the object providing stability......but that is just my guess!

I think that since the flow is laminar, and not turbulent, you are probably right. If it were turbulent, it would adopt a tear drop shape, water falling through air, which would be most closely be approximated by it falling end on.

Yes - as the bottle has a circular cross section - fluid flow round circles is pretty efficient, despite the larger presenented surface area in the direction of travel.

It was a good few months old IMO. I didn't think it would be that drinkable.

I'll take a stab.
The bottle has less drag falling sideways (smooth shape) than it does with the bottom first (square shape).

What is odd is that there is so much less drag despite the massive increase in frontal are when falling sideways.
I wish I could find a pic of a bottle falling in air, from a great height, to see what attitude it adopts. It might indicate an effect of boundary layer flow is playing a part.
