Scientific terms that describe chirality:
Sinistral - from sinister -> meaning left
Dextral - from dexter -> meaning right
"ambidextrous" is as follows:
Ambi -> meaning Both
Dexter -> meaning right.
Thus if you are ambidextrous you are "Both Right". Slap in da face for The sinisters

I think if you dig into it, dexter is more relate to implication of being capable, which as we all know, is predomoniantly a right-handed situation (as it should be).
Although we tend to dwell on the Latin derivation

From the Latin "dexter," for "right" (in the sense of right-left).
I suggest that the derivation is more akin to the typical meanings as described Here^, and that label thus applied to 'right'. Since left-handedness was considered (rightly) an ill omen, it was logically named such.
You're welcome to disagree, but that would, indeed, have sinister implications.
