Animated. Half a creature = 'anima', and animated is brought to life, and friend = 'mate', but more escapes me.

"Animates"?

And the explanation? (The original was close, but...)
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Half a creature -> Half(Animal) -> "Ani"
the friends -> "mates"
(they) bring things to life -> "Animates" (in simple present).

I thought so, but...
Brady didn't get the right answer, so I have to accept the first correct one.

Poor form, poor form. Definitely not cricket! The definition should obviously be 'brings things to life' and the wordplay should be adjusted to suit, not the other way round! You wouldn't get away with it on rec.puzzles.crosswords let me tell you!!!

It didn't scan well as "brings"!

So someone posts a word there and others compose and post cryptic clues for it? Am I correct?

There are three clue writing competitions currently running (there used to be more before everybody forgot about newsgroups - or at least those that don't provide legally questionable file downloading - but we had a bit of a cull last year). In two of them the moderator du jour (well, de la semaine, really) sets a word to be clued as you say. In the other, a clue is lifted from a published crossword to be emulated or improved upon by entrants (I'm moderator of the current running). After a certain amount of time the moderator does a summary of all the clues to ensure that he hasn't missed an entry and that his reading is what the entrant intended, then critiques the clues and picks a winner who, if willing and able, then dons the moderator's hat for the next running.
There are still discussions on specific clues and clue writing in general to be had alongside the contests but they tend to be rather infrequent and considerably more sedate than the humdingers of the past since a number of the rowdier participants have drifted away (unfortunately, I think, but I probably do not speak for the majority on that!)
If anyone from CP would like to 'join' you'd be very welcome. Just pitch up and pitch in. I'm the one with the extraordinary name currently moderating CCVP perhaps better known in crossword circles as Flying Tortoise, my nom de plume as a setter for the Listener puzzle in the Times.
