Agreed: I know that area well and lived in Marin for some years. It is wet and cold in the winter and you get the marine layer at the coast which can last all day up there. Still, other than that, it is a beautiful part of the world, particularly Marin. Forget Sausalito, Tiburon is the almost the same without the tourists.

None of it is as nice as the west country though. Dartmoputh, Foy, Salcombe....

I was down in San Diego in September, even then there was a bank of fog off shore and people said you need a pullover in the evenings. Christ knows what Vancouver is life, must be freezing cold.

Went for a horse ride on the beach up at Bodega bay though, that was nice, and where they filmed the Birds.

Did you ever go to the Pelican Inn on Pelican Beach? Its a quaint looking place, reminded me of Devon even more, since it was an exact copy of a Devon pub.

You mean Muir or Stinson beach? Marin County is pretty big.

The marine layer - get it here as well. I live a way inland and over the mountains so don't really see that. Much hotter here - have to have air con running quite a lot.

Had to think about that for a second - you've switched coasts! No, think we've been past it. Naples is a lovely part of the world; a place I could live. Like the whole of that Gulf Coast.From the UK, it's better to fly into Tampa than Miami. Much quieter and the drive down that coast to Naples is quite pleasant. They did a really good roast beef and horseradish with all the extras on sundays. 40 bucks buffet style, damn good it was. Bit of a drive from Sacramento though.

Never been south though except for a day to go on site at san diego, but I wasn't that impressed. I wasn't impressed by Santa Cruz or Monterey either. Looked a bit shabby to me.

You have to explore a bit. Monterrey is very touristy but the aquarium is pretty good. Carmel is very nice and the 17 mile drive, if it isn't raining, is very picturesque.

There are some really lovely places up and down the coast and some bloody awful. We're still exploring but not as much as we used to. If you like a drink, try staying at one of the wineries in Temecula. Supposed to be very nice.

I didn't like Carmel at all, just chintzy shops laid out in a grid pattern in a forest. No charm at all. Ever seen Honfleur, Dartmouth?

Oddly I think the best of it is where I was working, Sacramento and its surroundings, very bourgeois, not built up, but I would still get bored after a year there, that's why we didn't move out, despite the firm almost begging me too.

If I am in LA I will look you up, I'll have to practice some anti semitic jokes though!

thanks for your message, SF bay is a bit in the outskirts of silicon valley, and yes the weather at SF is not that sunny, compared to Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino and Palo Alto area
