Officially I am a binge drinker.
On most Wednesdays I go to the pub and have 3 pints of beer.

Alcohol has been a part of the human diet for thousands of years, long before we knew how to control the fermentation process. Fruit that has fallen to the ground often ferments and many animals, in addition to than humans, prize the fermented juice!
We have attempted to convince our fellow humans to forgo the booze, but to no avail. Religions have tried to ban it. Social organizations, such as the Women's Christian Temperance Union, have tried social pressure. Governments have tried to tax it out of existence (remember the Whiskey Rebellion in the US?) or to outlaw it. Outlawing it was REAL successful - it lead to the rise of organized crime in the US. All of these attempts came to no avail.
In fact, in the recent past, it was often safer to drink beer than to drink the local water. On second thought, with the tragic situation in Flint, MI, this is still true.
Establishing "safe limits" by government fiat is just another waste of time and taxpayer money.

Dickens has children drinking beer in his novels, precisely for this reason, so very well made point 
I was lucky enough to be brought up abroad where my parents gave me small sips of alcohol at a young age at at meal time. I also went to a school that had a 'beer club' where twice a week you could have a pint of beer in the senior common room from the age of 16.
This all helped me to have what I would call a healthy use of alcohol - so I am all for people being introduced at a young age with it being drunk with a meal.

My son went to France as an exchange student, came back with a rather refined taste for red wine. Expensive taste in a 15yo in Oz! From then on we had to have wine with most evening meals, painful I know.

"Safe Limits" do not stop people from driving drunk.
It is the fear of being pulled over by the Police and being arrested, or of being maimed or killed that stops them. Unfortunately, even that does not always work. All you have to do is watch the drivers around here between 11PM and 2AM on Friday or Saturday nights and you will understand.

Sorry, about the absence this morning. I have no excuse but multiple brain dysfunction leading to substantial rerouting and signal failure. If DEJ, having solved Nagy's replacement bus service clue, does not want to do it tomorrow then I will happily amend my omission and if he does then I will just as happily stand aside.
