For the longest time I've wanted to develop a couple of apps for market. I've started working on one, but it's slow and time consuming. I know if I could finish them that I could make money.
The biggest constraints are my job and family. I'm out of the house at work for 10 hours a day, then home to the family and all home stuff etc. That leaves little time for personal coding.
This morning on the way in I was listening to NPR and they were profiling a company that used crowd funding to launch a new product, rather than more traditional sources such as loans and investors.
So, do you think crowd funding would be a viable option to replace income long enough to develop and market an app? Off the top of my head without running any numbers, with all expenses and taxes, I'm thinking $200 - $250k for 1 to 1.5 years.
Anyone have any experience with crowd funding that you can share?
Thanks

There are a lot of webistes for that, maybe you check out those and evaluate if it would work out for you. Some projects there are going to raise way more $$$ than they need others don't even hit the 50$ mark.
It depends on the product, the expected outcome and how popular this might get/be at the end. Also, crowdfnding often works with special offers like meet the devs or get 10 editions instead of one. These offers are staged in different "pay amount options" like 5$ and you get the app, 20$ and you'll get 4 codes for friends, 100$ meet & greet, 500$, Meet & Greet with champagne and a note in the credits.
It really depends on what you are working at and what people would grant you as starting money. So first of all look at the different websites like "Kickstarter" and then evaluate how popular your product might be and how "fast" you could reach your goal of 200k$.

Thanks. I just had a quick talk with a guy here at the office and he said the same thing you did almost exactly.

One thing that concerns me is "giving away the farm" - as soon as I post this idea, there's nothing stopping someone else from doing it too - instant competitor.

Yup, that's a risk you have to take

I don't think that risk is as big of a concern as you might think. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Creative people have them all the time. But the vast majority of people simply do not have the time, energy, know-how, resources, guts, or discipline to turn their ideas into something real. The most important question (and the one that you will have to prove to the "crowd") is: do you have what it takes to endure the blood, sweat, and tears that is going to be required of you?

Can't you just tell the wife to get a second job so that you can sit at home and "work"???
Just tell her you need to realise yourself and be all that you can be!

From the little I have seen of the world of crowd funding (and which has put me off crowd funding), is that it appears that perhaps as much effort goes into the marketing of the product, in order to raise funds, as the actual final product itself.
The projects that appear to do well are those that have a lot of effort given to the videos and promotional material/webpages.
So there may be quite a lot to learn on that front depending on how good you are at marketing.

I did notice that. I looked at KickStarter and the videos/promos I saw were all elaborate. I thought the same - that unless I expended considerable effort in promoting it, it would never get off the ground.

I just found this thread while I was searching for my old thread(Wanted to include that in my new thread).
Kevin Marois wrote: Anyone have any experience with crowd funding that you can share? I'm not a creator but as a frequent backer(kickstarter), I could give you some info.
So you mentioned App.
Which platform? Desktop or Mobile?
And which category? Normal App or Games?
Based on Kickstarter statistics, Games is popular category there. But Technology category is not that popular. Still one could reach their depends on App Idea.
Regarding Goal amount .... For first campaign, it's better to go with $50 - $100K range. Then you can go with higher range. You have to create a steady backer range first.
I could share more info. based on your queries.

In looking at the bracket, I can see how each of the four regions (south, east, west, midwest) pares down its 16 teams to 1, and then the Final Four begins. But I don't understand the First Four (games). Two games played last night and two will play tonight. Why weren't those 8 teams part of the other regions? What becomes of the winners of those games?

Wichita State went into the South 16, and Florida Gulf coast went into the East 16. Tonight's winners will also make it into one of the regional 16.

Will they go to those regions as a bye, or who would they be paired up with (since it is a single elimination tourney)?

There were open slots in the real bracket for them. The whole thing is a stupid money grab.

Shelby Robertson wrote: There were open slots in the real bracket... None of the dozen or so brackets that I looked at had open slots; they were all filled in. Upon closer inspection, however, I see that one spot in each region had two teams listed, those from the First Four games. Makes sense now.
