I have low rep, but I've never really been on the receiving end of (truly) negative treatment in any area of the forums (and I've definitely said some stupid sh*t!) At least not to the level that would make me feel unwelcome.
My perspective is that the higher rep people here are actually rather nice, level-headed people; a stark contrast to most of the rest of the internet.
Maybe it's related to username? (Wouldn't that be an interesting psychology study?) That name on my account is indeed mine; for whatever reason (I genuinely don't know) I don't feel the need to hide behind a pseudonym here (and certainly do almost everywhere else.) Maybe that helps to humanize me, which leads to more humane treatment...
Then again, there are also certain people here who seem to be bigger a-holes than the rest (not naming names!,) so maybe I've just been lucky to not have interacted with them.

My co-worker has found a M1 Grand after his father died. Police took it for destruction, as automatic weapons are banned.

That's just wrong on so many levels. And besides, the Garand is not "automatic", it's "semi-automatic", requiring one pull of the trigger for every round fired. It was fed by a top-loaded five-round clip (not a magazine) that was ejected with an audible "ding" sound when empty. It was chambered in 30-06, and accurate out to about 500 yards.

The version used at WWII had 8 round clips (a block with two rows of 4)...Even today a very accurate gun...

Now, I'm not too familiar with the AR-15, but with the old Nato 762 SLR, I could fix that with 5 seconds and a matchstick.* I wouldn't be surprised if the AR was not much different.
* It took a little longer, and more than a matchstick, to get the damn thing to stop firing when you took your finger off the trigger.

You have to drill another hole in the receiver and use a different sear. A matchstick won't do it.
