At my school, the Engineering department acquired a USN fire control computer for us to play with. It was a room-sized analog computer consisting of racks of operational amplifiers made of vacuum tubes, so the thing had a MTBF of something like 8 hours. Those were the days! It's hard to imagine that the Navy actually used those things to direct gun fire on a choppy sea, using real time pitch and yaw inputs to modify radar return signatures and properly aim the things.
