Here in South Africa when sending a parcel through the postal system (not via a courier) the parcel gets delivered to the branch closest to the recipients address and they have to fetch it.
How does it work in the US? Do they actually deliver the parcel to the address or must someone go fetch it at a post office?
And how does it work in the UK?
The reason I'm asking is because there are some items I want to purchase from the US and UK and I want to make use of a parcel forwarding service (cheaper than international postage fees and they do the customs work for you). If the postal systems deliver rather than the recipient having to fetch the parcel then it would work for me.

In the UK, the post man (or a courier driver) turns up at your door with the goods.
If you aren't there, they may try to leave it with a neighbor (and a card will go through your door to tell you which), or they may leave it at the door if it seems secure. It's unusual to have to go to a depot to collect it - but it has happened with Royal Mail a couple of times.

Ordering from the UK or US will be no different than ordering from SA, the UK postal service is not going to physically deliver your parcel, they will only handle the UK side. Once it goes on a plane\boat to SA it becomes the responsibility of whoever is sub-contracted in SA to deliver the parcel.
