Look, all I'm saying is that the cheapest initial purchase price doesn't necessarily yield the best value over time.
Forget tablets and phones - do you buy cheap knock-off tools to work on your car? Do you buy the cheapest aftermarket parts to go in it - or do you buy quality?

Well, tablets/phones are designed to be obsoleted, so eventually, even if they don't actually fail, you are pushed/prodded/forced to "upgrade".
To cite your examples, that doesn't happen with hand tools. Parts are kind of out of context because we're dealing with tools when we talk about electronic devices.
Beyond that, device manufacturers actually count on peer pressure to get people to upgrade, while nobody really gives a damn which 1/2-inch wrench you used to tighten a bolt.

Everything's god chips these days, even your fridge will probably sh*t itself (power would be down anyway so wouldn't notice - time to eat all the ice cream and barbecue every steak therein), even a lot of portable generators rely on electronic dodads.
Pretty much every computer person would be out of work, like everybody else learning to drive horses, make fire out of wood, and eat squirrels' nuts and all. (apostrophe or comma?)

Not sure what "it" you're referring to but if you mean my tablet - Nope, that's not it's job. The devices that my career depends on are "electronic devices" (like John said) as in industrial PC's, CNC controls, servo motors, I/O systems, etc... All of which require a very high build quality.

So, what, you have to communicate with terminal servers, through RS232/422/485?
How do you manage that with an iToy?
Is there even a terminal appie for it? I never bothered looking for one for my iToy 3, because the device was incapable of so much else that it was a waste of baggage space.
And cabling? How the Hell do you connect? How much does apple screw you for an serial dongle?

Sorry, but none of that washes, with me.
I will state what I think, i.e. that apple mobile devices are of no use to me, because they're just toys for people to browse the Internet, take photos, play games, and maybe -- just maybe -- be used to show work-related docs or web pages to others at work.
That's what they're designed for, and I dare say they do it very well -- but they're still just toys, by comparison to what I need.

As for the rest of your statements... It's a safe statement that the VAST MAJORITY of ALL tablets (iOS, Android, Windows) are used by people to browse the Internet, take photos, play games and maybe show work related docs at work. Sheesh. Tablets (due to form factor, not OS) as a rule just aren't the right tool (yet) to do serious software development. Every dev I know uses a real desktop or laptop and isn't about to switch.
That being said I'm seeing more and more tablets (usually iPads to date) being used in retail POS, medical data logging and other work related functions. With server side apps and data synching tablets are a great choice.

Right, so what you're saying is that all mobile devices should be as functionless as the iToy, because that's all they're needed for.
Our needs, as professionals with jobs to do, don't matter.
I somewhat strongly disagree. I work comparative miracles with my android and windows tabs, and can do everything I need to do professionally with them.
The iToy is just a toy.
So stop getting all hoighty-toighty because you own a comparatively useless device (that all of us here could afford to buy multiples of, if they were of any use to us).
Get the one I mentioned earlier in this thread, and your opinion will change (not might change) incredibly rapidly.

Also, Android tablets can be expected to support standard mini USB charger slots, and head phone jacks for the foreseeable future.

Except of course it was an Android device that first dropped the head phone jack (Motorola, I think) and most of the major Android phone players are likely dropping the head phone jack in coming models (if reports can be believed).
As for the standard mini-USB chargers... they are notoriously bad (easily damaged over time). I'm hoping that USB C helps but I'm not holding my breath.

After using my previous tablet for almost 4 years, the battery started to go bad. It would only hold a charge for about 4 hours and drain while it was turned off.
I finally switched to a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (the 8 inch version) and am very satisfied.
By the way, not sure your situation, but my old tablet didn't turn on after (I thought) it was charging all day. The usb had separated from the adapter and it wasn't charging, but actually draining.
