I saw a video on this subject recently and this is why US dates are presented as MM/dd/yyyy rather than the more common dd/MM/yyyy. Apparently it became common practice in the US to state dates as August 3rd or December 15th rather than the other way around and that translated into the short form that is used to express a date.

You get used to it. You never like it, but you learn to live with it.
