Yeah, Once is an amazing album and I've listened to it a couple of times these past few weeks (because of this song actually). It was pretty much on repeat when it came out 
Other than that I don't really listen to Nightwish though.

Got some of these for the car, used them for years: snow socks - Google Search[^]
Yet despite their availability, people seem to either not know they exist, or cant be bothered to spend the £50.
So in this mega snow storm (mega for Britain anyway) I put the socks on to go out and get some photos.
Of the few cars that had ventured out, they were all in trouble. Either abandoned or struggling to get up tiny inclines. Yet here was I driving around, in drifts up to a few feet deep, up and down hills, without any problems. I font get it. Why the hell not buy snow socks?

Well, in Germany you won't need them because by law you need to put on winter tyres. Additionally in very snowy regions you also need to have snow chains.
So those socks are "useless" to us.

Yeah, winter tyres are best (in fact they are better than summer tyres in all conditions below 7C, which includes much of the UK in winter), then chains for when its really heavy.
I drove to the Alps in a Renault Espace with mud and snow tyres many years back. They have a very open tread and made from a soft rubber. It really was like driving on dry grass, no slip at all.
In the UK it seems we prefer complete ignorance instead.

Given the number of drivers who are too afraid to drive on clear dry roads, practically everything is useless.

I live on a fairly sharp hill and it's a non-stop comedy show once there's more than the slightest smidgeon of snow. I will be recommending these to the next person I have to give a push.

Why indeed spend £50 to stop you from getting stuck, miles from home, in the freezing cold, your car wrecked, or in a ditch. Having to sleep in the freezing cold on a motorway, to be rescued by the police.

If you need something, buy it - the only point I was making is that in the UK snow is only a problem once a decade, if that. For most people it's not worth it - just stay at home.

It is, of course, worth it, even once, to not be a victim of the weather.
And of course if we could all move about as normal in the snow there would be no loss of production, or GDP because of it.

Yes, of course, but the reason why Britain comes to a standstill when 3 inches of snow falls whereas Scandinavia, Canada et al manage with far more, is precisely because it isn't worth us investing money in such rare events. Cheaper to take the loss and just deal with it as and when.
