As one of the other posters said, new smartphones with new features are being released all the time, so waiting for the 'phone with The Next Big ThingTM means that you'll never upgrade.
If you are happy with the performance of your current 'phone, and don't need any of the newer features, why upgrade?

or you could buy a $50 phone that does all the things you need and have a weekend away on the money you saved (I'm guessing even after the discount about $500? more?) not buying the pixel.
Likely a lot more savings coz if you were getting a fancy phone the wife would want one too, and a new dress to go with it, and new shoes to go with the new dress...)

Work for myself, so ned access to emails at the very least which a AUD$50.00 won't do. Maybe in Singapore but over in Oz where morons have consistently shown the manufacturers we will pay way over for everything, the Pixel 2 XL is for the next couple of weks AUD$1,549.00 down to AUD$1,099.00.

Getting the Missus a phone too was a given, think I mentioned that in the OP but maybe not. Shoes and shite ain't an issue right now, 6 weks today since the Hip Replacement, she's not looking for shoes, dresses etc.

When I get a new phone, 1st thing I do is uninstall pretty much everything I can. Then I grab the apps off Google Play that I like using. But this is a rare event. I keep a cell phone until it absolutely just falls apart and burns a hole in my pocket.
I had Samsung Galaxy S3 I got new some years ago and kept it until last year when it died. Replaced it with an LG V-10. Helluva nice phone with a great camera and big bright screen. But it's already "obsolete." Seems that smaller screens are the new thing. Was in the Verizon store a few days ago and nothing had a screen as big as my old Galaxy or the V-10.
Sometimes the true reward for completing a task is not the money, but instead the satisfaction of a job well done. But it's usually the money.

The problem I have is that many of the crap apps from Samsung are super glued in and can't be uninstalled, at best you can disable and or not update, but they keep tuning up every couple of weeks and I have to manually stop them from updating.

My Galaxy S4 still looks pretty good since I put them in a case, it's just slow. My wife's which lives in a handbag looks like it is used daily on a construction site to hammer in nails all day. Don't like the idea of buying her a pricey phone outright (always got them on plans, but my carrier has been offering crap phones for the past couple of years and they want me to pay $10.00 per month per phone extra for not completely shite) but if I get one and she doesn't...well we've been together 30 years in a couple of months, and it's just easier to buy her one.

I entered the realm of Pure Android with a Nexus 4 in Feb 2013. Loved that phone, shattered that screen within 6 months.
Went to an HTC One in late 2013. Still (almost) functional, but falling apart.
Last April, I purchased a refurbished Nexus 4 on Amazon. Works wonderfully. $60 was more than worth it.
Have been thinking about upgrading to the 5X, current refurb price is about 200.

I can understand your dislike for Samsung and the crap they force feed your phone, I got an S8 and the amount of rubbish loaded on it is staggering. Prices between SG and Oz are the same, I compared them when I got the S8.
Looked at the Pixel but it was more expensive than the S8 and did not have NFC charging, that was about the only difference. I'll be interested to hear if you are subject to the deluge of crapware on the Pixel.

Good to hear I think. Just assumed they must have been better when Lopitair mention ~$500.00 for the price.

Will probably be down at lunch and get them so reckon I will know in a couple of days. I'm prety sure there isn't any extra shite as it's a Google product and they only want to show off their OS and product.
Got the Google Nexus 7 tablets years ago for the family and they were bare bones, great stuff, nothing but the OS until you install what you want.

I should be a pure software developer, dealing with algorithms 90% of the time and UI the remaining 10%.
My first projects as an intern (no access to production code, only a bare minimum simulacrum) were revising our RS232 communication classes and implementing MODBUS protocol over RS232 and TCP/IP (for reasons we can't use external components). Thus I became the Communication Expert... the second project was piloting a device we never attached to our machines. Thus I became the Strange Devices expert.
Guess what I did most of my time in the past 6 years? I literally have more hardware on my desk than the blessed hardware engineer. I even got to be moved from the developer pen open space to the hardware lab.

No, I almost never solder as my circuits are so experimental (aka: nobody knows how The Thing™ should work or be assembled) that screw terminals, breadboards or insulating tape are my main tools.
The chip and board parts are firmly the hardware engineer turf, I work with industrial standards at 24V and several Ampere or more.
