During a heat wave, one of my collagues came to work wearing nothing but a T-shirt and swimming briefs, speedo type. He even left his wrist watch at home.
Our boss sent him a note, telling that "It is marginally acceptable to come to work in T-shirt and speedos only. It is not acceptable to come to work in a T-shirt so long that there can be doubts whether you are wearing speedos or not."

Fired. Or perhaps sacked. Probably has happened to most of us one time or another. Now I have read that the Romans literally sacked people as a form of punishment and execution (Poena cullei - Wikipedia[^]). Now I wonder. Does getting sacked really go back to this nice custom?
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.
His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

No, it's 19th Century apparently: Google dictionary "Sacked"[^]

Getting one’s sack back came to be associated with one’s services no longer being needed or being surplus to requirements. Don't think so. The verb getting sacked, as in terminated from employment has etymological roots in Old English, but it is an interesting find.

It originated from the early 1800's because of the feeling you got when you were fired. People described it as feeling like you were kicked in the nut sack.
The intensity of the feeling was more pronounced the more years you had been loyal to your employer.

And it gets even more intense when they try everything to make you want to leave or dig out anything that could possibly serve as justification, just to get off a little cheaper. I remember working in a place where they tried over a year to get under my thick hide. Simply firing me would have been easier and cheaper for them.

Well that's how I got it. I see people use LOLL as an alternative to LOL quite often and I always assumed it didn't really mean anything other than people just putting an extra L for emphasis! (which I now still believe). But after you used it I thought maybe it does actually stand for something specific, so I googled it...
I still didn't get it at first but just as I was about to give up and close my Google results I spotted the word "lounge", and it all made sense... LOLL
