I thought I had killed one of my Pis on Monday while I was messing around with wire management on my server rack. I caused power to be cut/supplied repeatedly over the course of a minute or so, and as a result, the ethernet port stopped functioning. Given the nature of a (self-imposed) flaky power situation, I just assumed I had somehow crippled the Pi (it's useless to me if the ethernet port doesn't work), so I ordered a new one ($36 is easy to spend on a whole computer).

Yesterday, I got the new Pi, hooked it up, and powered it on, and much to my surprise, the ethernet port on the new Pi failed to work. I was all set to re-image the boot drive, but out of curiosity, I tried a known working cable. No joy, So I connected the cable to another port on my Linksys 8-port switch.

Huzzah! Connectivity!

So, I have a switch with at least one bad port, and an extra Pi. Smile | :)

On the way home from work today, I'm gonna pick up a new 16-port switch (I need seven ports, and now only have six available), and a spool of CAT-6 cable so I can make my own cables for more precise cable management.

Linux update:

0) Lubuntu/Kodi is running on a used Intel NUC I bought for $250 (and doubled the memory to 8GB). It appears to play my movies just fine. I still have to install some remote drivers, but that should be a minor task. This box will replace my current home theater PC (which is in a desktop case).

1) I intend to run OpenMediaVault on two boxes - one is for backups (will back up all other machines on the network using RSync), and one is for serving media to the Kodi box. The backup box is currently running Lubuntu and not doing anything - if fact, it's powered off right now. For the media server, I'm in the process of moving media files around so that I can reformat the media drives with from NTFS to EXT4. After that's done, I'll install OMV on it.

2) All of the laptops are running Ubuntu, but I think I'm gonna switch the two older ones (both are Acers running Atheros Wireless cards) to Mint/Cinnamon to see if the wireless problem gets cleared up. I can't get Ubuntu to connect with wireless at all on those two boxes.

3) Originally, I was going to install Ubuntu on my and my wife's desktops, but I've read that Mint gives a more Windows-like look/feel, which I think SWMBO will like better. I'll make that decision after seeing it on the Acer laptops.

4) I've decided that I have to maintain a Windows VM because I abhor the dev stuff on Linux. I wrote some code with MonoDevelop, but I really don't like that environment. I'll use VS2017 in a VM. I also need to use DVDFab to be able to rip DVDs without menu/copy protection, and there is simply no Linux app available that will do that (that I've been able to find). They made a half-hearted attempt at a Linux version in 2017, but they killed that effort with no reference as to the reasons. Bummer.

5) I gotta find something to do with the extra Pi - maybe use it to monitor the network...

6) I may write up an article for those looking to make the transition from Windows to Linux.
