Just about every known rechargeable battery is loaded with cancer causing agents. While LSD batteries aren't loaded with cadmium, nickel is still bad.
Conventional and alkaline batteries are primarily composed of inert metals.

True, but imagine a stack of 200 D size alkaline batteries vs 2 nimh D size batteries over their respective total lifespans.

It all depends on how many batteries you use, and they are not used as much as they used to be.
My primary use for non-rechargeable batteries is smoke detectors, with number 2 being flashlights

Sixteen years ago, I decided to embrace the recharge. After research, I bought the best batteries and recharger. It ended up to be a giant waste of money. Even my kids, who were young at the time, learned not to trust "Dad's" batteries. It had such a negative impact, they didn't trust rechargable anything for a long while (such as with MP3 players.)

Try some of the newer Eneloop batteries (other quality brands are available  ) they are a lot better but it does depend on application I agree.
If you can always charge them at a lower rate too, so they don't ever get warm I've found them to be very good, lasting a few months in things like the led candles we have, those ones have been charged at maybe twenty times over the five years we've had them.

A general warning: seen (had) batteries from major brands, such as Duracell, leak in devices and even leak sitting in a drawer. Heavy leakage. And five or six years left on the freshness date. For that matter, I've had NiMH batteries unable to hold a charge after just a few cycles: same batch, same device, same charging cycle - some just drop dead.
What did they all have in common? MADE IN CHINA
I simply won't buy them for those applications that require non-rechargeable. It's cheap insurance.

Just out of curiosity, if you want batteries NOT made in China, what do you buy?

Last time out for alkaline batteries (9v for smoke detectors), I got RayOVac, made in Malaysia. Not my favorite source, but at least long ago they had quality control (major source of Seagate HDD's when they were top dog).
For NiMH, some come from Japan (Enelope, also, some other grey thing got from Newegg).

The most important thing to know is what the application is going to be.
If you are going on a camping trip and using a flashlight a lot; I would recommend some Duracell alkaline batteries. That same flashlight just being for emergency use is getting conventional zinc-chloride batteries which will be replaced when I change batteries in my smoke detector every 6 months.
Why is this? I use an LED MagLight. The batteries do not get used up quickly, and will last and last and last. The problem is that the casings deteriorate and possible swell or leak before they go dead. I have a 10 year old one that still lights up (dimly) but I cannot get the batteries out to change.

I think not. I happen to have two in my household. One is "special" - has bladder issues, needs special food at $75/bag.
Insert  here. Normally my better half handles this.
Cat #2 likes to climb the new cellular shades I have just installed. Daughter, "Dad, kicking the cat will not solve the problem." Me, "It will if he goes far enough."
Other daughter is going on cruise, "Will you watch my cats?" she asks my better half. Yesterday, I came home to a large turd in the bathtub... oh yeah, *that* cat (he has a history of being picky).
